Read More	Rites Held on Wednesday for Joseph Leerar, 82 Came From Holland to Iowa in 1895 Joseph Leerar, son of Cyrus and Gretchen Leerar, was born Nov. 30, 1874, at Bierta, Holland. He received his education in his native land and united with the Reformed Church there where he grew to manhood. At the age of 21 he departed from The Netherlands and came to the States, coming first to Parkersburg, Iowa, in 1895. He was employed on a farm there until coming to Britt, and then on March 30, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Tena Sweers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Sweers, the wedding taking place at Britt. Six sons and four daughters were born to this union. Mr. and Mrs. Leerar attended the United Brethren Church at Stilson. Farming was their chosen occupation. Mr. Leerar took much interest in the raising of livestock, especially horses. He enjoyed sports, baseball above all others. Mr. and Mrs. Leerar retired from the farm in the year of 1950 and have since resided on West Fifth Street in Britt. For the past twenty-three months Mr. Leerar has been in declining health, having suffered a fracture of a hip in October of 1955. He spent much time in hospitals and confinement at his home. Death came Sunday morning, Sept. 29, at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 29 days. Surviving are the wife; and eight children: Jacob, of Corwith; William and Herman, of Britt; Mrs Orville (Caroline) Slagle, Billings, Mont.; Mrs. Leonard (Esther) Monson, Britt; Fred, Kanawha; Alvin and Mrs. Eppo (Ruth) Gremmer, jr., Britt; five daughters-in-law, three sons-in-law; thirty grandchildren; and seven great grantchildren; three brothers; Klaus, William and Stoffer Leerar, all in Holland. Two children preceded him in death, Hilda at age of 2, and Edward at 1½ years. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Stilson preceded by a prayer for the family at the Boughton Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Varce in charge. The remains will be laid at rest in Evergreen Cemetery at Britt with six grandsons as casket bearers.
