Johnson, 88, Hope, ND died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Villa Maria Nursing Home Fargo, ND. Abby James Johnson was born on July 24, 1925 to Alfred and Gerda (Nelson) Johnson in Hunter ND. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from school in Hunter in 1943 as the valedictorian of his class. Abby was united in marriage to Evelyn Harmon on Nov 7, 1944 in Hunter. In 1946, Abby was drafted into the Army, was trained in counter intelligence corps (CIC) and served post WWII in Germany. After his military service they lived in California for a short time before returning to the area. They then made their home on a farm near Galesburg, ND. In 1956, they moved to the Colgate - Hope area. They farmed for many years and later moved to Casselton, ND. Abby was an avid reader and history buff. He served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church in Colgate. He was also a 4H club leader, served on the Colgate School Board and did soil testing. He is survived by his wife Evelyn; four children, Alfred, Dean, Keith, Reiles Acres, and Judy Berg; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and his brother, Eugene Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, George Nordgren, Leonard "Pat" Nordgren, Elvina Grage, and Pearl Pearson.
