Description	:	Abraham's parents are not known and his birthplace has not been officially documented but it is believed he was born in Canada. There is considerable question about his exact date of birth. Some records say 1826, some 1827 or 1831. An 1870 census states his age as 39 which would make his dob 1831. However, the 1880 census of Cedar County lists his age as 53 which would make his dob 1827. However, the 1880 census of Cedar County lists his age as 53 which would make his dob 1827. It is believed that Abraham had a brother James who lived near him and their paths crossed numerous times on the census. Other brothers to Abraham are believed to be Jacob and Shell or perhaps Sheldon. The family came to the United States from Canada possibly through Michigan. Abraham married Maria Jane White in Jo Daviess Co., IL on February 02, 1851. They had six children: George Washington 1854, Ilan Fay "Richard' 1860, William Pearl 1865, Charles 1857, Emma 1862, and John Reiley 1866. After her premature death in about 1869, Abraham, left with six children, married Elizabeth Mitchell in Scott Co., IL on 01 March 1870. She had two children as evidenced on a census record. This marriage was apparently short-lived as he married Mary Kester in Cedar County on 25 May 1874. There is reason to believe that the six children were separated and the younger ones raised by other families following the death of their mother and the marriage of Abraham to Mary Kester as indicated on various census records. Evidence of this fact finds Abraham on an 1870 census in Benton Co., IA with only the little girl, Emma, with him. It was stated in his obituary that he had an "iron constitution" but sucumbed to rheumatism and spent his last years bedfast or in a wheel chair. He had made a profession of faith in his early life. It's interesting to note that, in the obituary, there was no mention of the second wife which leads one to believe that either the third wife, Mary Kester, was not aware of Elizabeth Mitchell or chose not to list her. Funeral services were held in the Reformed Church with interment in Mt. Zion on Tuesday, Oct. 5.
