On October 8 of last year he entered the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, and a few weeks later was removed to his home where he gradually grew weaker until the end. Mr. Dryden was nearing his sixty-seventh year and was born and reared in Crisfield, the son of the late Littleton T. and Charlotte Ford Dryden. After completing the course of study in the public schools of Crisfield, he entered Dickinson College where he graduated with honors. For a number of years he was engaged in the life insurance business and was quite successful in this line of endeavor. He became interested in politics and in 1889 was elected as a member of the House of Delegates from Somerset county on the Republican ticket and served in the session of 1890. In 1896 he was elected to the State Senate and served in the sessions of 1896 and 1898. He was again elected to the House of Delegates in 1901 and served in the session of 1902. He was one of the leaders at each session of the General Assembly in which he served. During his Legislative career, oyster culture was the all-absorbing question with the majority of voters of Somerset county. Mr. Dryden vigorously defended the rights of the oystermen both in the House of Delegates and the Senate. The claim was advanced that once the barren oyster bottoms were opened to private planting, the natural rocks would be encroached upon. Mr. Dryden supported this claim and no planting bill of any kind was ever passed through the General Assembly while he was a member of either body. Mr. Dryden was twice a candidate for the National House of Representatives from the First Congressional District. But being a strong Democratic District he was defeated each time, the first, in 1894, by the late Joshua W. Miles of Somerset county and the second, in 1910, by Judge J. Harry Covington of Talbot county. He was prominently mentioned several times as a candidate for United States Senator. He was appointed Assistant United States Treasurer in Baltimore during the Roosevelt administration and was later appointed Collector of Customs at Crisfield, being the last appointee to that office, this port being made a part of the Baltimore Customs District with a Deputy Collector in charge. After serving in this last capacity he was named United States Navigation Commissioner, which position he held at the time of his death. During Mr. Dryden's active political career, he was the acknowledged leader of his party in Somerset county and was also one of the State leaders. His personal following was one of the largest any leader of any political party ever had. The deceased is survived by his widow, who prior to their marriage, was Miss Effie Venable, daughter of the late Seth D. Venable; one son, A. Lincoln Dryden, Jr., of the faculty of Bryn Mawr Collage; three daughters, Mrs. Susan Turner, of Galveston, Texas, Misses Ethelyn and Gladys Dryden, of New York City; and one sister, Mrs. F. Leslie Barker, of Delmar. Funeral services will be held from his late home this (Saturday) afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by Rev. John J. Bunting, pastor of Immanuel M. E.
