Dryden And Founder Of Big Interests In Crisfield Crisfield, Md., Sept. 29.—Littleton T. Dryden, of Crisfield, father of A. Lincoln Dryden, collector of this port, died of peritonitis following an operation, at the General Marine Hospital, this city, early this morning. Mr. Dryden was born in Dublin district, Somerset county, in 1837, and was 75 years of age. Although he never had the advantages of a college education, he was one of the best read men in the county. Endowed with a great intellect and a wonderful memory, he had a great knowledge of public men and their policies in both State and nation. In politics Mr. Dryden was a Republican. He had held many offices of public trust and was well known all over the State. For some years he was a United States Deputy Marshal, in which position he made such a good record that he was appointed United States Commissioner of this district of Maryland. This place he filled 10 or 15 years. Under the administration of President Harrison he was made United States Shipping Commissioner, with headquarters at Baltimore, which place he held for about six years. In 1896 he was appointed superintendent of Immigration by Gov. Lloyd Lowndes, and four years later great pressure was brought to bear upon the Democratic Governor, John Walter Smith, for his reappointment. In early life Mr. Dryden moved to Crisfield and had been actively identified with the business interests of the town up to the time of his death. To him and his partner, Silas Tyler, the city is indebted for much of its prosperity through the development of the soft crab industry. The deceased was a member of Immanuel Methodist church. As a local preacher and superintendent of the Sunday school he was earnest and active. During his residence in Baltimore as shipping Commissioner he devoted himself to church work at the Broadway Mission and was commended by Cardinal Gibbons. Mr. Dryden is survived by his widow, who before marriage was Miss Charlotte E. Ford, a member of the well known Ford family, of Somerset county, and sister to the late Samuel Tubman Ford, the elocutionist. He leaves two sons and two daughters: A. L. Dryden, collector of the port of Crisfield; Sherman Dryden, Mrs. Horace Sterling and Miss Annie Dryden, all of this city. Baltimore Sun, Baltimore, Md., September 30, 1912, p. 9
