DePriest, well and familiarly known to many citizens in this county. Mr. DePriest was born in Jefferson County, Illinois, July 7, 1830, and had almost reached his 61st milepost at the date of his demise. When quite a youth he removed from Illinois to Oregon County, this state, where he resided until after his marriage, when he located in what is now Birch Tree township, and erected the first dwelling and cleared the first farm in that part of the county, his nearest neighbor being a distance of 20 miles from his new home. He lived in that neighborhood until the commencement of the Civil War, when he espoused the cause of the Confederacy and went out to battle for his country, and served until the year 1863, [Lt, 4th MO Confederate Infantry] when he removed with his family to Illinois and remained there until the close of the rebellion, after which he returned to his old home and was elected Public Administrator in the year 1870, and removed to Eminence, where he was appointed County Clerk in February, 1871, by the resignation of Henry Bell, and served in that position until the first of January, 1874. He was then appointed Deputy Sheriff and Collector under L. J. Whitworth, which position he filled for four years, consecutively. His wife becoming unhealthy, Mr. DePriest sold out his possessions and traveled with her to various health resorts, but all to no avail, she died at West Plains in the spring of 1883. [Mary 'Polly' Huddleston, abt. 1830 - 1883]. In the summer of 1885 Mr. DePriest returned to Shannon County again and was elected Assessor in 1886 and re-elected in 1888, his position expiring two days prior to his death. Taking it all-in-all, Uncle Abe, as he was familiarly known, was one of the most prominent men that we have ever had in our county, not only as an official, but in many other particulars. He was one of the first men that helped to survey and locate lands in South Missouri, and engaged in selling land numbers to parties that made entries under the Graduation Act in this part of the state. At times he dealt largely in (live)stock, engaged in the mercantile business, kept hotel, and, in fact, followed almost all kinds of business and enterprises out of which he could earn a livelihood. Like many other men, Mr. DePriest had many misfortunes, but he always arose above them, and seemed to recognize no such word as 'fail'. In his social life he was kind and affable, possessing a generous and sympathetic heart, and it can be truly said of him that more people received charities at this hand than any other man that ever lived in our county. We cannot lift the veil and penetrate into the mysteries of the unknown, but we do believe that in spite of creeds and dogmas, that the noble, generous heart that warms into sympathy at the distresses of his fellow man, that shows its faith by its deeds of kindness and charity, has a purer, nobler realm of light and immortality in which to dwell eternally than those whose only hope is a theoretical creed based on superstition and fear and whose only idea of religion is the dread of a future punishment. It might be well to mention that Mr. DePriest was living with his third wife, whom he leaves, together with two sons, two daughters, two brothers and one sister, to mourn his loss. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow societies and was buried by the honors of the last named fraternity in the family grave yard near his own home where rests his parents and other members of the family. His time on earth is ended. He has finished his work and rests in quietude and repose in the silent grave, from the vicissitudes and labor of a busy life. ~ The Current Wave, Winona, Thursday, June 11, 1891.
