Dukes, 80, one of Branchville's oldest and most highly respected citizens died this evening about 6:15 o'clock at him home on Ott Street after an extended illness. Mr. Dukes had been in failing health for several years, and for some time he had been confined to his home. He became worse last Wednesday and sank rapidly. Dukes, 80, one of Branchville's oldest and most highly respected citizens died this evening about 6:15 o'clock at him home on Ott Street after an extended illness. Mr. Dukes had been in failing health for several years, and for some time he had been confined to his home. He became worse last Wednesday and sank rapidly. Mr. Dukes served as magistrate in this district of Orangeburg County for more than twenty years, being elected to the office following the death of the late J. W. R. Berry. He continued to serve the people in this capacity until he was appointed a member of the State Dispensary Board on which he served for some time. Mr. Dukes was a farmer and for many years operated a cotton gin and saw mill here. He lived his entire life in Branchville. Mr. Dukes was twice married. His first wife was Miss Martha McAlhany. Of this union the following children survive: B. A. Dukes of Augusta, GA; W. A. Dukes, W. S. Dukes and S. M. Dukes of Branchville and Mrs. W. S. Broughton of Columbia. His second wife was Miss Ella Hutto, who with the following children, survive him: Dan K. Dukes of Orangeburg; H. L. Dukes, V. J. Dukes, and C. W. Dukes of Branchville; Dr. M. Heyward Dukes of Hillsboro, NC, and Mrs. N. C. Black of Bamberg. He is also survived by one brother, P. C. Dukes of Branchville and one sister, Mrs. J. W. Berry of Elloree, thirty-nine grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Mr. Dukes was a lifelong member of the Branchville Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at the Methodist Church at 11 o'clock and will be conducted by his pastor, the Rev. S. W. Henry. Interment will be in Ott Cemetery. Will recorded in Book 12, pgs 561-562: State of South Carolina, County of Orangeburg. I Abraham S. Dukes being of mature age and of sound mind make this my last Will and Testament. I will and bequeath unto my wife Ella V Dukes all of my Real Estate consisting of a portion of the lot known as the Homestead lot, And the lot known as the Millhouse lot in the Town of Branchville S C, To have and to derive all the emoluments and benefits of same during her natural lifetime and after her death to my lawful Heirs share and share alike. If any of my lawful Heirs should decease before the death of my Wife Ella V Dukes and leave Children then their children comes Heir to their portion, (Heirs in this Will means my lawful children). I Will and bequeath unto my wife Ella V Dukes all of my personal property consisting of what it may, to have and to hold to use dispose of and derive all benefits therefrom --- This being my last Will and Testament. I name as Executors of this Will Ella V Dukes and Dan K Dukes. (Signed) Abraham S. Dukes. We the undersigned witnesses, Hereby certify that we witnessed the signature of the above testator we being in each others presence at the the time and witnessed the signing of same by the Testator Abraham S Dukes in each others presence.
