Mrs. Cowan was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H.I. Marsh of Gilgai, where she spent practically the whole of her early life. For some years Mrs. Cowan had resided in the City, but she came to Inverell to visit a son, Mr. C. McLachlan of Brae St. Inverell. COWAN By the recent death of Mrs. Ada Grace Cowan of Sydney, Inverell lost a member of one of it's oldest families. Mrs. Cowan was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H.I. Marsh of Gilgai, where she spent practically the whole of her early life. For some years Mrs. Cowan had resided in the City, but she came to Inverell to visit a son, Mr. C. McLachlan of Brae St. Inverell. Soon after her arrival the old lady took ill and was confined to her bed, later transferring to the District Hospital. Mrs. Cowan was twice married. Her first husband was the late Mr. John McLachlan of Inverell. There were three children of that union - Messrs. Alec (0, and Clive McLachlan of Inverell, and a daughter, Ethel (Mrs. WM. Nyland, Charlestown, Newcastle, who predeceased her mother. The second marriage was with Mr. Donald Cowan, a Gilgai farmer, who later acquired the Gilgai Post Office and Store, which he and his wife conducted for some years until his death in Sydney. Mrs. Cowan was of a kind and gentle nature and was hold in affection by all who came to know her during her long residence in this district. She was a staunch friend and always ready to help in times of need and distress, and many of the older Inverell residents recall the name Cowan with many happy memories. Of the second marriage there were three sons and four daughters. The sons of that marriage are - Messrs. Gillis (Sydney), Vic (Melbourne) and Fred (Sydney) and the daughters - Thelma (Mrs. W. Clegg, Sydney) Isela (Mrs. M. Crane, Sydney) and Erna (Mrs. Leo Grogan, Sydney). One daughter, Gertie2 Mrs. C. Beat, predeceased her mother. There is a large number or grandchildren. Mr. Herb Marsh of Gilgai is the only surviving brother and a sister is Gertie (Mrs. J. Yates, Perth. W.A.) Contributor: Arlene Michelle (49266525)
