Description	:	Dwain Mooney was born at home in Sparks, on February 2, 1939 to Adolph Bernard Mooney and Ella Agnes (Forster) Mooney. He came into the world weighing in at almost 15 lbs, the third oldest of six children. Dwain was always an energetic child but according to him, he flunked Kindergarten because he couldn’t skip. Read More	Dwain Mooney was born at home in Sparks, on February 2, 1939 to Adolph Bernard Mooney and Ella Agnes (Forster) Mooney. He came into the world weighing in at almost 15 lbs, the third oldest of six children. Dwain was always an energetic child but according to him, he flunked Kindergarten because he couldn’t skip. When entering High School, things looked up when he got into sports. He was an acclaimed football player for the Valentine Badgers and he also excelled in track. The real story, he met Rose Mae Whipple on a blind date in 1956. The two married on August 18, 1957 shortly after he graduated high school. Dwain left in February of 1958 with “The Nebraska Beef State Company” (a group of Nebraska boy’s headed to the military) and joined the Navy to serve as a Corpsman. Upon graduating Navy Basic Training, Dwain was stationed in San Diego, CA, where he and Rose welcomed their first child, Penny. Shortly after Penny’s arrival, Dwain was shipped off to Guam to be a medic for 18 months during the Korean War. Dwain exited the Military in 1961. The family then returned to Nebraska, where they welcomed two more children, son, Ken in 1961 and daughter, Kim in 1966. The family was living in Gorden, where Dwain managed the S and S Store before moving to Parmelee, SD. Dwain and Rose owned and operated Mooney’s Market and several other businesses and Dwain even served as the temporary Postmaster in Parmelee for a short while. In 1980 they relocated to Kilgore, where he owned a gas station and ran canoes on Dwain’s beloved Niobrara River. Dwain and Rose adopted grandson Jerry in 1986 and spent their time going to school events and staying involved with their community. Dwain held many positions in his life to include; beach lifeguard, first responder, volunteer fireman, head of security at the Rosebud Casino, police officer in Cherry County, and was known to be a limitless storyteller. Dwain and Rose retired to Big Springs in 2012, where he spent his time completing honey-do lists for Rose until her passing in December of 2016. Dwain was laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery on November 16, 2020. He is survived by children, Penny Murphy of Big Springs, Ken (Sandy) Mooney of Upton WY, Kim (Steve) Osmera of Big Springs, Jerry (Breanna) Mooney of Julesburg, CO; sisters, Carol (Tom) Kennedy of Callaway and Paulette (Jerry) Waggle of Mountain Grove, MO, 10 grandchildren, 21 greatgrandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. As well as numerous extended family and friends.
