Description	:	DOUBLE FUNERAL SERVICES Adolph Theodore Popken, age 76, passed away very suddenly in his sleep on July 18 at his farm home in Grant Township. His wife, Clara, had died two days earlier after suffering a heart attack at her home. Funeral plans had been made for Mrs. Popken. She was to have been buried on Saturday. Services were postponed until today and double services were held. Mr. Popken was born October 5, 1875 in Germany. He came to America at the age of 14 to Danforth, Ill. He lived there a short time and then came to Plymouth County where he since lived. He was the son of Katherine Johnson and Gerhardt Popken. On October 22, 1902 he was united in marriage with Clara Harms Kruse Popken in Plymouth County by Rev. Theodore Meyer. Double funeral rites were held at 2:00 p.m. today, Monday, July 21 at St. John's American Lutheran church in Preston Township and burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. E.J. Beckmann officiated at the last rites. Mauer's funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Survivors of the couple include the children: Mrs. John (Dora) Westhoff, Strublc, Albert Popken, (Alma) Onken, Mrs. George (Clara) Oetken Mrs. George (Emma) Westhoff all of Le Mars; Mrs. Henry (Della) Dirks of Merrill, Mrs. William (Hilda) Renken of Le Mars, Miss Helen Popken at home in Grant township, Mrs. Harvey (Amanda) Haage of Le Mars and 13 grandchildren. A brother; George Popken of Long Beach, Calif.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Helen Cordes of Lohrvillc, Iowa, and Mrs Meta Datow of Berlin, Germany. Precceding them in death was an infant daughter, Tena; Mr. Popken was preceded in death by a sister Mrs. Dena Euken and a brother Carl in Germany. Both were confirmed in the Lutheran Faith in Germany. Mrs. Popken was born, Clara Harms Kruse on January 4, 1882 at Ackley, Iowa. She lived in Plymouth County near Le Mars since 1885. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, John and Harm Kruse. The Rev. E.J. Beckmann officiated at the services and burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Popken died Wednesday following a heart attack and Mr. Popken died in his sleep early Friday. The attending physician said grief over his wife's unexpected death resulted in his death. Adolph Popken was born October 5, 1875 in Germany. He came to America at the age of 14 and lived in Danforth, Ill., a short time before coming to Plymouth County. He has lived here since that time and was farming in Grant Township at the time of his death. He was married to Clara Harms Kruse October 22, 1902 by Rev. Theodore Meyer in Plymouth County. His wife preceded him in death by two days. Survivors are a son, Albert Popken, at home in Preston township and eight daughters: Mrs. John (Dora) Westhoff, Struble; Mrs. John (Alma) Onken. Mrs. George (Clara) Oetken, Mrs. George (Emma) Westhoff, Le Mars. Mrs. Henry (Delia) Dirks, Merrill; Mrs, William (Hilda) Renken, Le Mars; Helen Popken, at home and Mrs. Harvey (Amanda) Haage, Le Mars. Also 13 grandchildren, a brother, George Popken, Long Beach, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Cordos, Lohrville, Iowa and Mrs. Meta Datow, Berlin, Germany.
