Burial will be in the Preston township church cemetery. Clara Harms Kruse Popken was born Jan. 4, 1882 in Ackley, Iowa. She came to Plymouth County with her parents in 1885 and has lived in Plymouth County, near Le Mars since that time. She was married Oct. 22, 1902 to Adolph Popken in Plymouth County. Survivors besides her husband are a son, Albert Popken, at home in Preston township and eight daughters: Mrs. John (Dora) Westhoff, Struble; Mrs. John (Alma) Onken, Mrs. George (Clara) Oetken, Mrs. George (Emma) Westhoff, Le Mars. Mrs. Henry (Della) Dirks, Merrill; Mrs. William (Hilda) Renken, Le Mars; Helen Popken, at home and Mrs. Harvey (Amanda) Haage, Le Mars. Also 13 grandchildren, one brother, Dick Kruse, Le Mars and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Frerichs, Le Mars, Mrs. Tena Mammen, Sioux City. [Source: Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel; Le Mars, Plymouth County, Iowa, USA; Friday, July 18, 1952; Volume LXXXI, Number 58, Page 4] Double Funeral Rites Monday Adolph Popken Dies Two Days After Wife Double funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Theodore Popken, who died Friday and Wednesday of last week, were held Monday afternoon, July 21, at 2 o'clock at St. John's American Lutheran church in Preston Township. The Rev. E.J. Beckmann officiated at the services and burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Popken died Wednesday following a heart attack and Mr. Popken died in his sleep early Friday. The attending physician said grief over his wife's unexpected death resulted in his death. Adolph Popken was born October 5, 1875 in Germany. He came to America at the age of 14 and lived in Danforth, Ill., a short time before coming to Plymouth County. He has lived here since that time and was farming in Grant Township at the time of his death. He was married to Clara Harms Kruse October 22, 1902 by Rev. Theodore Meyer in Plymouth County. His wife preceded him in death by two days. Survivors are a son, Albert Popken, at home in Preston township and eight daughters: Mrs. John (Dora) Westhoff, Struble; Mrs. John (Alma) Onken. Mrs. George (Clara) Oetken, Mrs. George (Emma) Westhoff, Le Mars. Mrs. Henry (Delia) Dirks, Merrill; Mrs, William (Hilda) Renken, Le Mars; Helen Popken, at home and Mrs. Harvey (Amanda) Haage, Le Mars. Also 13 grandchildren, a brother, George Popken, Long Beach, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Cordos, Lohrville, Iowa and Mrs. Meta Datow, Berlin, Germany.
