Agnes was born on a farm near Wakonda SD in Bethel Twp, Clay CO, SD to William and Dena (Anderson) Roberts. John passed away on March 16, 2017, having... Read More	Agnes Fern (Roberts) Sealey, 93, passed away June 28, 2018 at her daughter’s home on the family farm near Meckling SD. Agnes was born on a farm near Wakonda SD in Bethel Twp, Clay CO, SD to William and Dena (Anderson) Roberts. She attended Bethel and Pleasant Valley country schools, then Wakonda school, then Meckling school where she graduated in 1943. She married her high school sweetheart, John Sealey, on August 7, 1943 and they lived on the farm where John was born and raised, till her death after 74 years. John passed away on March 16, 2017, having enjoyed 73 years together and raising four children. Besides working with John on the farm, they worked as janitors for the Meckling School until she went to work as store manager at Sears in Vermillion, SD until she retired in 1978. Agnes was a natural with the piano having learned early on as a child. She played anywhere, anytime until her eyesight began to give her problems the last few years. There were many songs, though, she could have sat down at any piano and played from memory. In her spare time and earlier years, she played piano with John’s local band for community and lodge festivities, especially the New Year’s Eve dances. She was a member of the Bergen (Meckling) Lutheran Church since marriage and was active for many years as a Sunday School teacher, choir director and primary pianist for over 40 years. Agnes was also a 74 year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, all four branches, and held offices at the local, state and international levels including President of the International Ladies Auxiliary of the Patriarchs Militant in 1993. Other organizations she belonged to were the VFW Auxiliary and the Eastern Star. Agnes had many accomplishments in her life but the one that meant the most to her was in 1962, when Agnes was Rebekah Assembly President for SD. Her statewide project was advancing the World Eye Bank and Visual Research Foundation. It was through this foundation that her father was able to have eye surgery and glasses that restored the vision in one of his eyes after he had begun losing his eyesight due to iritis in 1918. He became totally blind by 1945. It was a whole new world to him for his remaining years. Agnes’ daughter Nancy donated her eyes to the Foundation when she passed away in 1994. The Eye Bank and Research Foundation is still available to Odd Fellow and Rebekah members. Agnes liked to cook – everything. Besides canning fruits and vegetables for the family, her jellies and jams, cookies, banana bread, cakes and pies were of blue ribbon quality. She shared them generously with family, visitors and friends. Through the years she sewed, did the books, learned and worked on the computer, but her favorite was to play cards. She knew most card games but pinochle has been the one she enjoyed the most (single, double or triple deck). She played her last games less than a month ago at the Main Street Center and Odd Fellow Lodge with friends. Above all, Agnes loved her family (both immediate and extended) and would do just about anything for any one of them. Most of all she just enjoyed spending time with each and every one and felt so proud in getting to witness her 23 great grandchildren come into the world. Agnes is survived by her son Mike, her daughter Jane and husband Mike Slattery, her grandchildren: Randy (Nancy) Huot, Cliff (Sherrie) Huot, Ladonna (Donovan) Leach, Kim (Jim) VanderWoude, Nick (Cindy) Slattery, Tom (Jean) Slattery, Jim (Carmen) Slattery, Bill (Susan) Sealey; and 23 great grandchildren; Ron (Joan) Huot, Alice Peters, 10 nephews and nieces and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Nancy Huot, son Joe, great grandson Matthew, sisters Norma (Ole) Linsley and Berneice (Dwight) Joslin, brothers-in-law Harold (Henrietta) Sealey, George Sealey, and 2 nephews.
