Read More	Jane Slattery, 72, of Meckling, SD, died the evening of Friday, July 23, 2021 at her home. Sanford Hospice staff, husband Mike, her three sons, Nick, Tom and Jim and granddaughter, Hannah Slattery, were present as she passed on. Jane Marie (Sealey) Slattery, known to those close to her as Jane, Janey, Mom, Sweatie (sic) was born December 12th, 1948 in Vermillion, SD, to Agnes (Roberts) Sealey and John F. Sealey. She grew up on her parents' farm near Meckling, SD, and attended Meckling School and then Wakonda High School where she graduated in 1967. Jane's childhood included softball, milking cows, tending the chickens and loving all animals with which she came into contact. She shared memories of walking with her siblings in deep snow to school, which was nearly two miles away. She grew up with not only her brothers and sisters, but also her cousins, with whom she remained as close as siblings her entire life. Family gatherings and social events, 4H and mending fences as a child, made her into who she was as a wife, mother and grandmother. On April 10th, 1968, Jane married Michael Q. Slattery, with whom she shared 53 wonderful years. They had three children all of whom shared her vigor for life. As a nurse, Jane worked in home health, hospice and some clinic work. After moving to Arizona in the late 70's, she continued some nursing, but also took on the role of GM test driver. Later she managed a hardware store for a few years where unfortunately she damaged the nerves in her shoulder and that developed into a chronic malady known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or more commonly known now as Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1. No matter what they called it, Jane took it head on and attempted to help others in support groups. Ultimately she learned to live with it, and it was not going to let it define her. When her brother Mike was injured in a car accident in 1979, which left him essentially paralyzed and unable to speak, Jane helped guide the therapies for him. Jane and (husband) Mike also brought him to Arizona to live with them, where Jane could keep a close eye on him and attend to his technology for communication and personal needs. She was his guardian (angel), and ensured he had proper care, keeping medical staff on their toes, up till his death in 2020. Jane was a staunch activist for quality of life concerns, and it wasn't just talk. She made sure that all of her siblings had the appropriate end of life care. She bore the pain and suffering for them. She fought for them. She fought for many of you. She'll continue fighting. Even her pets received proper care. Jane had a beautiful singing voice. She recited her hymns, folk songs, known by heart mostly, and could sight read piano. She learned to play guitar a little, but could hold her own in family gatherings and holidays to help the songs along with either the piano or guitar. She was a Eucharistic Minister along with Mike at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tempe AZ during the 80's and early 90's. Every Sunday, unless we were camping. She could fix nearly anything, with nearly anything. Patches for clothes, blown bike tires, sewing, ripped awnings, torn tarps, shredded rope, tupperware, glasses, cuts, bruises, dog bites and many more. An inspiration to her family, friends and just about anyone, to figure it out, do the work, and just get it done. Both Jane and Mike had a love for the outdoors, and spent many weekends in the Mountains of Wyoming, the Black Hills of South Dakota, the Rockies, and most of all, the Mogollon Rim of Arizona. Jane was a fantastic limited ingredient cook, which was most obvious during excursions in the woods. Even though Jane loved certain aspects of Arizona, after nearly 17 years in the desert, she and Mike went home to Meckling, and built their final home in 1998 a stone's throw from her childhood home on the Sealey farm, with the help of their oldest son Nick, and other family and friends. She loved simply being outside. She loved her gardens, her porches, her plants. She loved her pets, King, Alex (Kitty), Sylvester, Maggie, Abby, and Sophie. She loved her friends. She loved her family. She loved. She was loved. She is love. Jane's entire immediate family preceded her in death; her parents, sister Nancy (Ron) Huot, brother Joe, and brother Mike. She joins them all, by the grace of God, including her ancestors for whom she has a great many questions as she has carried the torch of family history for a large portion of her entire life. Jane is survived by her husband, Mike, children, Nick (Cindy) Slattery, Tom (Jean) Slattery and Jim (Carmen) Slattery, grandchildren, Aaron, James, Hannah, Lucas, Rayanna, Shane, Jacob and Ethan. The world is a little less bright today with the loss of this wonderful woman. But the world is a whole lot better because she was part of it.
