Agnes Jane Brown was born in Cincinnati, Ohio a daughter of John and Nancy (Colville) Brown, on March 13, 1853, making her 76 years, ten months and ten days at the time of her death. She came from Cincinnati to this state in 1875 and settled with her family at Marion, Ks. In September 1877 she was married to James M. Corbett at Marion, and to this union two children were born, both of whom survive. They are Mrs. H. T. Lantis (Bessie) and George Corbett both of Newton. In 1893 the family moved from Marion to a farm five miles southeast of Newton and here they lived until 1904 when they moved to Newton. Mr. Corbett died on January 25, 1920. Besides the two children surviving, Mrs. Corbett leaves a sister, Mrs. Ellen Terry of 401 East ninth. Mrs. Corbett was one of the dearly beloved women of Newton. Everyone who met her, loved her. It is said of her that young people, especially, were drawn to her and all who had occasion to deal with her spoke warmly of her. She loved her home and adored the son with whom she made her home, and it undoubtedly is a consolation to that son in his hour of loss that he was devoted to her and made the last years of her life happy ones by his affection and consideration.
