Corett has passed to his reward, having been summoned from earthly life Sunday morning at 5:00 o'clock at his home at 400 East Eleventh after an illness of three months, during wich time he had to bear the suffering occasioned by cancer. James Corbett was born in Clarion Co., Penn, Feb. 25, 1846, and came to Harvey, county in 1871 homesteading near Walton. He left his homestead to reside in Marion and during the residence there, he was united in marriage to Agnes J. Brown on September 5, 1877 in Kansas City. They moved to Harvey county in 1893 and their home was on a farm southeast of Newton. In 1904, they came to Newton to a family residence on East Eleventh. He is survived by his wife and son, George, who is at home and a daughter, Mrs. H. T. Lantis, Jr. of Newton, also five grandchildren and one sister whose home is in New York. He enlisted in Co. L, 11th Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry in 1862 and served three years, receiving his discharge May 31, 1865 at Ft. Monroe, Va. He was prominent in all of the activities of the Judson Kilpatrick Post No. 36 and the post will have charge of the service in Greenwood. Mr. Corbett exerted a great influence for good in the community in which he had resided in pioneer days and his helpfulness in community life was always remarked by his old friends who speak of him as having been a consistent Christian and a very genial man and one whose counsel was appreciated by his neighbors and friends. He was a true patriot, not only in his actual service in the civil war but in his convictions all during the years that followed. Until ill health forced him to remain at home he enjoyed thoroughly the meetings of the G. A. R. and the social features which was a part of their program, and contributed much of their success and did many acts of kindness for those ill, in financial distress and sorrow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kansan, Thursday, January 29, 1920 A large number of friends attended the funeral of James M. Corbett held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Presbyterian church conducted by the pastor, Rev, A. H. Morrison. Hymns were sung by a quartet, Mrs. Amos Graybill, Miss Elsie finley, J. T. Albertson and H. C. Douglas, with Miss Kathryn Thomas accompanied and there were many beautiful floral offerings. The members of the G. A. R. and the W. R. C. attended in body and the G. A. R. conducted their ritual at the grave at Greenwood. Those who bore the casket were members of Wayne G. Austin Post, American Legion: Carl Nelson, Elmer Swengle, Roy Barker, Jack Boren, Frank Plummer and John Orein and the honorary bearers were members of Judson Kilpatrick Post, Grand Army of the Republic: A. Parkhurst, C. A. Cook, E. E. Pollard, J.L. Caveny, Henry Burgener and Harry Smith.
