Description	:	Agnes M. Gardenhire passed away at the age of 94 on October 19, 2005, at Sacred Heart Hospital. A longtime resident of Spokane, she was born on May 14, 1911, at the family home on DeSmet Avenue to Thomas W. Leonard and Wanda V. Krieger Leonard. She attended Holy Names Academy, Lewis and Clark High School and St. Luke's School of Nursing. Read More	Agnes M. Gardenhire passed away at the age of 94 on October 19, 2005, at Sacred Heart Hospital. A longtime resident of Spokane, she was born on May 14, 1911, at the family home on DeSmet Avenue to Thomas W. Leonard and Wanda V. Krieger Leonard. She attended Holy Names Academy, Lewis and Clark High School and St. Luke's School of Nursing. Agnes was a great storyteller and won the hearts of many with stories of when she delivered the newspaper and milk and eggs from the family farm in Garden Springs as a kid; was the first young woman to operate a gas station in Spokane; shoveled sand to help build the Grand Coulee Dam; and drove a fork lift in Hawaii during World War II. Later, she married John (Jack) Piper and lived and worked at hospitals in Grand Coulee and Moses Lake. When Mr. Piper passed away during the 1950s, Agnes moved back to Spokane where she lived for the rest of her life. During the 1960s, Aggie married Dudley (Bud) Gardenhire and was very active in the Women's Auxiliary of the VFW Post 1435, of which she is a hall-of-fame member. She retired during the 1970s after working for several years at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Agnes lived 25 of her later years on West Bridge Street, where she made beaded jewelry and angels for friends and came known as "Grandma Cookie" for making holiday cookies for neighborhood kids. During her last three years at Park Tower Apartments, Agnes continued to make many friends who enjoyed her stories of the past as well as her kind, sweet and generous nature. She is survived by one brother, Joe Leonard of Boise, Idaho; four nieces, Kathy Zilys of Liberty Lake, Mary Sue Blinzler of Spokane, Cammie Skipworth of Auburn, Washington, and Jilla Senkbeil of Harbor City, California; one nephew, Tomn Blinzler of Marysville, Washington; several grandnieces and grandnephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Viewing and visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Sunday the 23rd from noon until 5:00 p.m. and Monday the 24th from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Traditional funeral services will be held at Heritage Funeral Home Tuesday the 25th at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. —From The Spokesman-Review; Sunday, October 23, 2005
