Description	:	Ala (pronounced "Aye-lee") Edward Sewart, born January 12, 1876, in Harrison County, Missouri, was the second of four children born to Fredrick Ferdinand and Sarah Ann (Cochran) Sewart. When Ala was four years old, his father and mother relocated their young family to Hollis, Kansas, an unincorporated farming community in Cloud County. Ala grew up in Hollis with his siblings, Catherine, Elmer, and Maude. Ala was united in marriage with Zelia Rose Grandmougin on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1901, in Hollis. Read More	Ala (pronounced "Aye-lee") Edward Sewart, born January 12, 1876, in Harrison County, Missouri, was the second of four children born to Fredrick Ferdinand and Sarah Ann (Cochran) Sewart. When Ala was four years old, his father and mother relocated their young family to Hollis, Kansas, an unincorporated farming community in Cloud County. Ala grew up in Hollis with his siblings, Catherine, Elmer, and Maude. Ala was united in marriage with Zelia Rose Grandmougin on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1901, in Hollis. Ala and Zeilia were the proud parents of three children: • Claire Delia (Sewart) VanZandt (1902 - 1989) • Freda Irene (Sewart) Hulse (1905 - 1976) • Norman Edward Sewart (1907 - 1992) According to two obituaries (The Concirdia Press and The Concordia Blade), Ala owned a general murchandise store in Hollis for several years. He had been in poor health for some time and late in January of 1923, he became very sick and was diagnosed with influenza. An illness that was more than his already weakened system could stand and a severe hemorrhage followed. As doctors and family attended to him, he gave testimony that he had prayed and that Jesus was with him. Among his last words were these, “It’s all right now. Amen. I’m going home. All of you get ready. I want to see every last one of you there.” On February 21, 1923, Ala Sewart died at his home at the age of 47 years, one month and 9 days. Ala's wife, children, mother, and two sisters were present when death came. Ala's obituary described him as a kind, quiet man with an inoffensive disposition that won him many friends. His funeral was held at the M. E. church where a large crowd was in attendance. He was buried in the Hollis Cemetery.
