Description	:	Al was born in Osage, Iowa on October 31st, 1934, to Charles H. and Edna I. Bailey. He died peacefully at home on July 18th, 2008 following a gutsy and courageous battle with lung and bone cancer. Growing up in Osage in those days was carefree and full of fun and "boy stuff". Al graduated from Osage High School where he was Athlete of the Year and an excellent wrestler. During those years he worked and drove truck for McCoy Ice Cream. Al graduated from Osage High School where he was Athlete of the Year and an excellent wrestler. During those years he worked and drove truck for McCoy Ice Cream. He attended the University of Iowa for one year before enlisting in the Army during the Korean War. He spent two years of active duty in Korea, and then six years in the reserve. During those reserve years, he completed his B.A. in geology at the Univ. of Iowa, and moved with some buddies to Kansas City, MO. to work at Fisher Body. From Kansas City he moved to St. Louis to work for Liberty Mutual Insurance as a Safety Engineer, and that is where he met and fell in love with his future wife, Charlotte, While in St. Louis he pursued and got his teaching credential. He secured a teaching position at Charles Evans Hughes Jr. High in Woodland Hills, CA, and began teaching there in 1962 - the same year that he and Charlotte were married. He taught math and science at the school for 8 years, and then decided to move the family (now four strong) to Kenwood, in Northern California. He commenced to teach for the Santa Rosa City Schools at Rincon Valley Jr. High School, and taught there for the next 31 years, retiring in 2000. He moved to Redding permanently at that time, having spent a lot of time up here since 1991. His love and respect for Jr. High aged children has been admired and envied by many. Al was a volunteer firefighter for the Kenwood Fire Protection District for 30 years, retiring as Captain. While his children were growing, he was a little league manager, and a Boy Scout leader, taking boys on 50 mile hikes, canoe trips, camping, climbing Half Dome in Yosemite, and taking the troop to Philmont Boy Scout camp in New Mexico. Since being in Redding, he has volunteered at Cypress School, Whiskeytown National Recreational Area Visitors Center and First United Methodist Church. He and Charlotte thoroughly enjoyed traveling with their R.V. partners, Joyce and Joe Hampton to all parts of these United States that included Civil War Battlefields, the Alcan Highway, and many National Parks and Monuments. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte; son Alan (wife Lee Anne and granddaughter, Grace), son Craig (wife Lisa and granddaughter Kellie); brothers Don (Jan) and Mike (Terri), sister-in-law Marsha (Roger Booth) and brother-in-law, J. Milton Keller (Nancy), aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many wonderful friends and neighbors. Interment will be a family service at the National Veterans Cemetery in Igo, CA. A Celebration of Al's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25th, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church.
