Alan Frank Bossemeyer was born February 15, 1924 to Hazel (Ruttman) and Fred Bossemeyer at Superior, Nebraska. He attended the Superior schools, graduating with the Class of 1942. As a teenager, during the summer months he worked for Winebar Plumbing & Heating, Portland Cement Company, Bossemeyer Brothers Elevator and Bossemeyer Hatchery, making enough money to pay his first year at the University of Nebraska. Alan was drafted and served with the United States Army Air Force. Uncle Same sent Alan to North Africa where he started his first tour of duty. He participated in seven European invasions. Also, he flew from India over the hump into China and Burma, hauling mules in C-47’s. From that theatre, his squadron was called back to Italy. At the end of the war, he test flew aircraft which were to return to the U.S. Alan returned to the U.S. aboard the aircraft carrier “Lake Champayne”. After his discharge he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation, surveying the irrigation canals from the Harlan County Reservoir-Republican River area. He returned to the University of Nebraska, transferring to the Sparton School of Aeronautics at Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he graduated. Meantime, his father became ill and had to have an emergency operation. In order to help his parents with their hatchery operation, Alan gave up his flying career and moved back to Superior. In 1949, he met Marie Evelyn Novak and they were married the next year. After 15 years working for his parents, Alan decided to go into business for himself. He and Marie purchased the Blue Valley Drive Inn at Crete, Nebraska. They operated it for 13 years and then sold it in 1977. Alan was not ready to retire, so he found work at ALPO Pet Foods in the maintenance department where he worked for another seven years. Alan worked with the Boy Scout Troop in Crete since he was involved with Scouts many years in Superior. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Crete Troop. Alan was the second person to earn his Eagle Scout in Superior (the first was Raymond Ruth). He was a member of the Superior Masonic Lodge and all its bodies for over 50 years. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Olive Chapter #63 in Superior and served as Worthy Patron in 1963. He also was a member of the Superior American Legion Post #103, playing bugle in the Drum & Bugle Corps, and kept his lifetime membership there. He was also a lifetime member of the Crete VFW Post #4959 and the Superior Elks Lodge #2197. Alan always had a talent for fixing and repairing most anything. He learned how to work with wood when he took manual training in high school. He refinished many pieces of antique furniture which his mother bought at auction sales. Alan and Marie was privileged to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on October 15, 2000. Marie preceded him in death in 2011. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Linda Ann Surline and husband Bill of Copperas Cove, Texas; his son, Frank E. Bossemeyer and wife Cristi of Lincoln, Nebraska; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a sister, Julene Marks of Niceville, Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
