Description	:	Jurina Akke Elgersma was born in August 1929 in the Dutch agrarian settlement of Neerlandia, located about 60 miles northwest of the city of Edmonton, the seat of the Canadian province Alberta. She was the first child of six children of Anne Sybren Elgersma, born in the Dutch northern province Friesland, and Haitina Catharina Schmidt, born in the northwestern part of Germany. She was the first child of six children of Anne Sybren Elgersma, born in the Dutch northern province Friesland, and Haitina Catharina Schmidt, born in the northwestern part of Germany. Jurina was named after her maternal grandmother Jurina Meints Heien. She had also two half-brothers, Simon (Sybren) and Albert Elgersma, who were born in 1919 resp. 1920 in Friesland from the first marriage of her father Anne Elgersma to Antje Reinsma, who died in 1922. Anne remarried in March 1928 Haitena and in the same year they emigrated with Simon and Albert on the S.S. Ryndam to Canada, Alberta. On October 16, 1937 her mother Haitina Catharina died of a heart attack, 20 minutes after the birth of daughter Haitina Catharina Elgersma, who was named after her mother, as a tribute. In 1943 Jurina quit school to stay home and take care of the family. Jurina Elgersma worked for several years in her birthplace in the Neerlandia Co-op store, until she married on October 30, 1952 the 11 years older Ryer Krikke, who was born in Neerlandia too. They started farming on a quarter (160 acres) of land in Neerlandia, which his father had bought, and where they had from November 1954 until July 1968 three sons and two daughters. Her husband Ryer Krikke died in July 1985 at the age of 64 years, after suffering from cancer for six months, very probably in Neerlandia, or in hospital at Barrhead. Widow Jurina died in March 2008 at the age of 78 years.
