(Bert) Cooter, 89, longtime resident of the Flugstad-Webster city area, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon at the Hamilton County hospital. He had been in ill health for the past year. Albert Howard Cooter, son of David and Rachel Cooter, was born Nov. 14, 1875, near Rantoul, Illinois. He resided there with his parents until he was 18 years old, at which time the family moved to a farm southwest of Webster City. Later the family purchased a farm on the Hamilton-Webster county line near Flugstad. He was united in marriage March 3, 1897, to Susan Carden, and the couple made their home on a farm one mile north of Highview, moving one year later to their farm just south of Flugstad. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1937. He had continued to reside on the farm where his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Crawford, made their home with him. In November, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford and Mr. Cooter moved to 1304 Elm St., Webster City. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Homer (Edna) Crawford: one grandson, Gerald Crawford of Oakland, Calif., who is serving with the Navy air force and serving aboard the USS Ticonderoga, one sister, Mrs. Henrietta Nelson of Webter City, and several nieces and nephews, In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, who died in infancy; his parents, one brother and three sisters. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Modern Woodmen Lodge. Mr. Cooter was very active in civic affairs and held many offices during his life. He served as a township assessor for four years and was on the board of the Flugstad Farmers Elevator for 20 years, serving as president for 14 years. He helped organize the Mt.Zion Electic association and was president of the association for 13 years, being secretary and treasurer at time of his death. He had been a member of the Webster county tax review board for over 16 years. His paternal grandmother was Mary Houston, a sister of Sam Houston, a famous Texas pioneer. Sam Houston wanted Mr. Cooter's father to go to Texas and make his home with the Houstons, but the elder Mr. Cooter rejected the offer and preferred to remain in the North.
