Further information developed the fact that Bert was taken sick at his work in Pueblo on Saturday, with acute gastritis, and he was hurriedly taken to the company hospital at La Junta, where he died several hours later. Albert L. Hinkle was born in Poland, Mahoning County, Ohio, December 25, 1864 and was therefore in his 49th year of age. He removed to Iowa with his parents in 1870 and in the fall of 1874 the family moved to Halstead. At an early age, while his brother, George was the Santa Fe agent in this city, he showed a liking for railroad work and for a number of years prior to 1889 he held a clerkship at the depot, handling business between the Santa Fe and Frisco roads. When the later road ceased to operate trains into Halstead in September 1889, Bert was transfered to the general offices of the company at Topeka and was later sent to Fort Madison, Iowa. After leaving the latter city he became a Pullman conductor with a run between St Louis and Memphis. Returning to the employ of the Santa Fe he was sent to Pueblo as chief clerk in the freight office of the Santa Fe and the Colorado Southern. His ability as a competent railroad official was soon recognized and upon the death of the joint agent in the big wreck at Eaton, Colorado, Bert was promoted to the responsible position of joint freight agent for the Santa Fe and Colorado Southern, which position he held for eighteen years, or until his death on Sunday. He was the youngest member of the original Hinkle family in our city. He is survived by two brothers, George Frank P. Hinkle of Everett, Washington. His eldest brother Charles Hinkle of Long Beach, California and this city in 1887, and the other brother the late William C. Hinkle, passed away July 14th of last year. The remains arrived here Tuesday morning and were in charge of W Ken Robertson of Rocky Ford, a lifelong friend and associate. The body was taken to the W. C. Hinkle home from where the funeral was held at 2:00pm Tuesday, with Rev. W. J. Shull of the Methodist Church in charge. Interment was made in the family lot in Fairview Cemetery beside the remains of his parents and Brother Charles.  Halstead Independent July 10, 1913
