Heart trouble with its attendant disorders was the direct cause of his passing away. His condition had been considered serious for the past month and while him momentary death was expected, yet the end was not looked for at this time. William Clinker Hinkle was born at Poland, Mahoning County Ohio July 29, 1857 and had therefore not quite reached his 55th birthday. He removed with his parents to Blairstown, Iowa in 1868 and came with them to Halstead, KS in 1874, since which time, or for thirty-eight years he has been a resident of Halstead. He was married to Miss Mary Helen Markel, his now bereaved widow, October 26, 1880. He united with the Methodist Church in 1885 and had since been a consistent member. At an early age, he learned the trade of blacksmith in the shop of the late James Ryan and followed this occupation for several years. Later he was employed in the hardware store by J. E. Ruth & Co. and a few years later found him as the local manager of the Halstead store of the Leman Hardware and Implement Co. In the spring of 1892 he purchased from that firm the business and associated himself with J. S. Eymann under the firm name of W. C. Hinkle & Co., which has since become known throughout this portion of the state. During his comparatively short lifetime, Mr. Hinkle held many local offices of trust and responsibility and always performed the duties faithfully and well. He was the first City Marshal of the town and for seventeen years was a Justice of the Peace for Halstead Township. He also served the city as Police Judge for several years and besides frequently being a member of the City Council, was twice elected to the office of Mayor. For fifteen years he had been treasurer of the School Board, which office he held at the time of this death. He has handled many thousands of dollars of public money and his well-known strict business methods have plainly showed that not one cent was ever diverted to private use. William Hinkle was kind, big hearted, and generous and true to his friendships and convictions of what was right and wrong and could always be found on the right side of any moral question which effected the community. He was essentially a home loving man, generous and indulgent to a fault and his passing away breaks the family ties of a most congenial home. He was devoted to his wife and children, who keenly feel the stinging blow of the hand of death. The writer had enjoyed the friendship of the deceased for nearly twenty-eight years and it is one of our cherished memories to have been associated with him in such a way that the true manly character of the man was evident on so many occasions. He is survived by the widow and three children who are Pearl Hinkle (James G.) Frazer, George A. and Miss Helen Hinkle. A son, William Markel Hinkle, died in infancy. Three brothers also survive; they are being George A. Hinkle of Mt Hope, Kansas, Frank A. Hinkle of Everett, Washington and Albert L. Hinkle of Pueblo, Colorado. The oldest brother, Charles Hinkle died in this city in 1886. Mr. Hinkle was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge when it was organized in this city and was still a member at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen and A.O.U.W., in which he carried polices of two thousand dollars each. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the Methodist Church and there was a large outpouring of citizens present to pay the last tribute of respect to one who had just closed a career of thirty-eight useful years in the community. The stores were closed and the entire town took on a period of mourning. Many beautiful floral designs covered the casket which had been contributed by the many friends of the family and associates of the deceased. The impressive service was conducted by Rev. Hawk, after which the remains were laid to rest in the family lot at the City Cemetery. The Masonic fraternity carried out its ritualistic service, the Newton members doing the work at the Church and at the Cemetery. The pall bearers were chosen from the local Lodge membership and were E. C. Cadwell, C. Hinkson, C. L. Saylor, C. D. Masters, S. H. Trego, Geo. Howell, A. Mellurne and C. S. Brown.
