Description	:	Albert was the son of Roelof Alberts Pluim [1831-1900] & Neeltien Groenink [1828-1875]. He married Elizabeth Bijkerk [1864-1903] on 1 Sept 1886. They had 12 children (3 died in childhood); sadly Elizabeth died 6 May 1903 giving birth to their 12th child who also died. Albert Pluim with children Andries [1889-1966], Hendrik [1891-1967], Lieffert [1891-1949], Roelofje [1894-1967], Neeltje [1895-1970], Lukas [1898-1976], and Karst [1901-1990] left Steenwijk in the Netherlands on 14 Feb 1907 destined to Springfield, South Dakota. (His older two sons Roelof [1887-1961] and Cornelis [1888-1980] had gone to Springfield the year before). The family arrived... Albert Pluim with children Andries [1889-1966], Hendrik [1891-1967], Lieffert [1891-1949], Roelofje [1894-1967], Neeltje [1895-1970], Lukas [1898-1976], and Karst [1901-1990] left Steenwijk in the Netherlands on 14 Feb 1907 destined to Springfield, South Dakota. (His older two sons Roelof [1887-1961] and Cornelis [1888-1980] had gone to Springfield the year before). The family arrived in the USA via the Port of New York on Holland-American Lines Steamer SYNDAM on 27 Feb 1907. Lammigje [Lena] Bakker, who was to become Albert's second wife on 29 Jan 1908, travelled with them. Albert and Lena went on to have 7 children: Wilhelmina (1908-1969), John (1909-1990), Oretha (1911-2006), Ralph (1915-1991), Lucile (1918-2013), Annie Barbara (1919-1919) & Josie (1922-2007). After about one year in Springfield, they moved to a farm near Capa, South Dakota (now a ghost town). They were living there at the time of the 1910 census. Then by train to Edmonton, Alberta arriving 15 Sept. 1911. Entered Canada via North Portal, Saskatchewan on 13 September 1911, cash and effects $4000.00. In July 1914, while a resident of South Edmonton, Albert filed for a homestead near Rochester, Alberta (S.W. Quarter of Section 9, Township 63, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian). His son Hendrik [Henry] applied for the adjacent homestead north (S.W. Quarter of Section 9, Township 63, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian), and his son Andries [Andrew] applied for the adjacent homestead south (N.W. Quarter of Section 4, Township 63, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian). In 1915, his son Lieffert [Lee] applied for a nearby homestead (N.E. Quarter of Section 16, Township 63, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian). Apparently all this land was impossible to farm because it was very marshy, so the homestead applications were abandoned. Son Cornelis (Casey) did take over his father's application (S.W. Quarter of Section 9, Township 63, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian) a for time in 1916. Nicolaas & Meint Bakker (cousins of Albert's wife Lena) applied for homesteads to the east of the Pluim Homesteads (Nicolaas applied for S.E. Quarter of Section 9, Township 63, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian & Meint applied for the adjacent homestead to the south: N.E. Quarter of Section 4, Township 63, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian). Then he purchased a farm near Wetaskiwin, Alberta 16 April 1916. (N.E. Quarter, Section 32, Township 44, Range 22 West of the 4th Meridian), where they took up residence. Albert took his oath of allegiance In Wetaskiwin, and became a Canadian citizen on 14 Nov 1924. His daughter Roelofje (Rose) wrote the following account in her diary: "When I was eight years old my Mother died leaving seven boys and two girls. The oldest brother was sixteen and the youngest two. Then Nellie my sister one year younger. I can still remember the morning my Dad told us and said he would be both Mother and Father to us. For a while, my Aunt, Mother's sister, took care of us. We also had other help as my parents had been pretty well to do, but after one year my Aunt took sick and also passed away. That must have been very hard on my Grandmother to lose two daughters in one year. After that an Aunt of Dad's came to take care of us but that did not work out, as she was old and not used to children. Then we got a housekeeper called Margaret - how we all loved her. She was with us three years. Then my second oldest brother Cees wanted to go to America. He wanted our oldest brother Ralph to come with him. Ralph at that time was studying for a Doctor. but some how he thought he would go along and learn later but of course he never did. So in the year 1906 they both left for Springfield South Dakota. When they were there a few months Cees got so homesick and wanted to go back, but Ralph did not want to go back so in 1907 my Dad decided also to move to Springfield. We had hoped that Margaret would come along but her parents would not let her go so Dad had to get someone else which later became his wife. I can still remember my Grandmother when we had to say goodbye to her. She was 82 years old. Now when I am a Grandmother I can understand how she felt when we left, her daughter's children. She only lived 8 months after we left. I was 12 years old when we left, but how I longed for her at times. We were so used to going in and out of her house, something like my Granddaughters do now. We lived in Springfield South Dakota for one year. Then moved to Capa. My Dad took out a homestead. It seemed good to him to get land for nothing. Well he paid plenty for it in the end. We lived there for four years, never raising a crop, so he spent a lot of money. My oldest brother went back to Springfield, South Dakota then Andy moved to Edmonton, Canada. That was in 1911 - he went with his friend in a covered wagon. They went as far as Great Falls then from there on took the train. So in 1912 we also moved to Edmonton, leaving the rattlesnakes and cactus behind us. We really liked Edmonton. What a difference - we really lived again. We moved to Wetaskiwin in 1916. That is, my Dad bought the farm there. All the family moved there."
