Description	:	Cornelis was the 2nd child of 12 born to Albert Roelofs Pluim [1865-1951] and his first wife Elizabeth Bijkerk [1864-1903]. Cornelis first arrived in America from the Netherlands in 1906. He and his older brother Roelof sailed aboard SS Statendam from Rotterdam on 10 March 1906, and arrived in New York on 22 March 1906. He and his older brother Roelof sailed aboard SS Statendam from Rotterdam on 10 March 1906, and arrived in New York on 22 March 1906. They stated they were going to join a friend A. E. Bijl in Springfield, South Dakota. In 1911, most of the members of the Pluim family relocated to Edmonton. Casey returned to the Netherlands to marry his childhood sweetheart on 24 July 1913. Cornelis & Trijntje arrived in the Port of Quebec on 9 Aug 1913 aboard the SS Hesperian, which had sailed from Glasgow on Friday, August 1, 1913 (8 days after their marriage in Steenwijk). They made the journey with Cornelis's cousin, Egberdina Leeuw (nee Bijkerk) and her four young children: Herman, Klaas, Femighe and Egbert, who were on their way to join her husband Klaas Leeuw (who had arrived in New York City on S/S Nieuw Amsterdam on 26 March 1913 from Rotterdam) in Strathcona. Another cousin, Anneus Groenink, travelled with them. There were only some 39 passengers known as 'transmigrants' among the 454 passengers - so no wonder it was helpful to their party that Cornelis spoke English. They travelled 2nd Class (Ticket Number 86932). The departure record from Glasgow stated they arrived in the United Kingdom at Grangemouth on a 'feeder ship' operated by J. Rankine & Sons. Their son Albert was born in Edmonton, June 27th, 1914. In the fall of 1914 when Albert was four months old, they moved to a homestead near Dapp, Alberta, going with a group of Dutch acquaintances, namely, Mike and Nick Baker, Mr. Wieger Peterson, Mr. Joe Ensing, Mr. and Mrs. Klaas Leeuw and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Zilverberg. The Pluims resided there for about a year and a half and then Mr. and Mrs. Pluim went to work for a farmer named John Duke north of Edmonton. In 1916 they went to the New Norway district and worked for a Mr. Hinde and then approximately 1917 they went to work for a farmer and rancher Mr. Jay Pelter, New Norway. In 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Casey Pluim purchased the SE-20-47-22-W4 from Mr. Charles Pelter in partnership with his brother Henry Pluim. They resided here for approximately one year moving back to a farm west of New Norway in 1919 where Albert started his first year of school at Hoover School. In the summer of 1921 the Pluims moved back to the farm near Gywnne. Albert then attended Harvest Home School and had many interesting years on the farm. There was little in the way of roads in those days so Bittern Lake became their post office and trading centre, partly because of its easy accessibility of being able to cut across Bittern Lake in the wintertime, as well as the road being more level and easier to travel in the summertime. They used to alternate trips into Bittern Lake with their good neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. George Boehm. The Boehms being a middle class aged German couple without children, seemed to take a special interest in Albert, and in spite of making a great nuisance of himself at times. Mr. Boehm being a great naturalist and conservationist even in those early days, must have certainly had an early influence on Albert and his lifelong interest in nature. In 1930 at the age of nine years, Andy Edinga came to make his home with the Pluims and to continue his schooling at the Harvest Home School. In 1964 Mr. and Mrs. Casey Pluim retired from the farm and made their home in Wetaskiwin. In 1968 they became residents of the Lutheran Home – a Senior citizens home, now called the Good Shepherd Home.
