About 1854, Albert and Lucinda moved near Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, and lived next door to Lucinda's younger sister Barbara Ann and her husband John Fleming Dragoo Sr. in Section 15, of Buchanan township, Berrien County Michigan (see photo of their cabin near Buchanan). ----------------------------- Albert and Lucinda had eight children, seven born in Indiana and the last one born in Buchanan Twp. Berrien Co. MI. (The children are listed on the memorial for his wife Lucinda Tomlinson). ---------------------------- The 1850 Fed. Census of Harris Twp. St. Joseph Co. IN (near South Bend and Granger), lists Albert and his family, with a James Tomlinson, who was four years younger than Albert, who was also born in Kentucky. (Could he be Albert's brother?) ------------------------------- An article from the Buchanan, MI newspaper (with a picture of his old log cabin, in Section 15 of Buchanan townnship), states: --- LAST INHABITED LOG CABIN The Tomlinson cabin was the last pioneer log cabin in the immediate vicinity of Buchanan to be inhabited. It stood on the side road leading west from the Miller School Road, near the site of the John Hemminger home. The cabin was built by Albert Tomlinson in 1854 and his family moved into it and lived there the first year without windows and doors. The openings were covered with blankets. The house was of the "Kentucky" type of log cabin, a principal feature of which was two doors in contrast to only one door in most pioneer cabins. Tomlinson came to the Buchanan area from Kentucky where he had been an overseer of slaves on a plantation. On his way, his mother became ill and died. They stopped three days for her illness and funeral. She was buried near Logansport, Indiana. Tomlinson established a blacksmith shop near his cabin and did iron work for the early settlers. The cabin was torn down about 1925. ------- Note: It is thought that the mother mentioned in the article above, was actually his mother-in-law. --- Note: Descendants of Lucinda's sister Elizabeth (Level/Leavell) Metzger and her husband John Metzger Sr. state that John and Elizabeth also came from Kentucky to Indiana, and that the mother died on the way and that she was buried in Logansport, Indiana. (Perhaps the two sisters and their families come together, along with their mother, and their younger sister Barbara Ann (who later married John Fleming Dragoo Sr.). ------------------------------ "The Buchanan Record" newspaper on Thurs. Aug. 28, 1890, page 3, states: --- Mr. Albert Tomlinson, aged 74 years, died at the home of his son Benjamin, about three miles North of town, on Thursday last. He was an old pioneer of this section, having moved to Harris prairie [in Harris Twp., near Granger and] South Bend [St. Joseph Co. IN], in 1836, and to this township [Buchanan Township, Berrien Co. MI], in 1854. ------------------------------- Albert died Aug. 21, 1890 in Buchanan Township, Berrien Co. Michigan at the age of 73 years, 11 months, and 29 days. ------------------------------ He was the last known person to be buried in this cemetery. ------------------------------- Albert shares a headstone with his wife Lucinda, and their 17-year-old daughter Elizabeth. His side of the headstone reads: --- ALBERT TOMLINSON BORN Aug. 23, 1816 DIED Aug. 21, 1890 ---------------------------- His wife Lucinda and his daughter Elizabeth are also buried here, as well as his daughter-in-law Harriet (Barber) Tomlinson (the wife of his son Benjamin). ----------------------------- Headstone photos courtesy of Robert D.
