(Other family histories also have it spelled as "Leavel", "Leavell", and "Levell"). ------------------------------------ Lucinda Level was married to Albert Tomlinson Sr. on July 7, 1836, in Kentucky. ------------------------------------ Albert and Lucinda moved from Kentucky to Harris Prairie [Harris Twp., near South Bend and Granger], St. Joseph County Indiana in 1836. They later moved to Buchanan township, in Berrien County Michigan in 1854, and lived next door to Lucinda's sister Barbara Ann (Level), and her husband John Fleming Dragoo Sr. ----------------------------------- Lucinda's sister Elizabeth Level/Leavell was born in 1818 in Kentucky, and died Feb. 8, 1880, in Niles, Michigan. Elizabeth Level was married on Oct. 11, 1836 in Stanford, Lincoln County Kentucky to Johann ("John") Baptist Metzger Sr. Elizabeth and Johann Metzger Sr. had 13 or 14 children. Lucinda's sister Elizabeth and her husband Johann B. Metzger Sr. also moved from Kentucky to Harris Twp. St. Joseph Co. Indiana, possibly with Albert and Lucinda. John and Elizabeth Metzger later moved to Niles, township (N.-E. of Buchanan), Berrien County Michigan about 1859. Ten years later their home burned and they then moved two miles away. Johnn B. Metzger Sr. owned about 1,000 acres near Niles, MI (per: "A Twentieth Century History of Berrien County Michigan", page 763). John and Elizabeth Metzger are buried in the "All Souls Chapel", in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, in South Bend, St. Joseph County Indiana. ---------------------------------- Albert Tomlinson Sr. and his wife Lucinda Level had eight children (all born in Indiana, except for the youngest child Mary Ann, who was born in Buchanan Twp., Berrien Co. Michigan). ----------------------------- 1. John W. Tomlinson. (a teamster). b. 1838, in Indiana. m. He married Mary/Maria Ann Unknown, "about" 1857. Children: Margaretta, Francis M., Melvin M., Sherman A., Albert F., and Lydia B. Tomlinson. ("Possibly" died on March 9, 1903, in Olive township, New Carlisle, St. Joseph County Indiana). ------------------------------------ 2. James Alexander Tomlinson. b. Oct. 30, 1839, in St. Joseph County Indiana. m. Nov. 14, 1861 to Thankful Jane Stevens, in Berrien Co. Michigan. She is the daughter of Sylvester Stevens, and his wife Elizabeth Graves. Children: Nettie Blanche, Willis J., Laura I., Elva R., and Alton Monroe Tomlinson. James and Thankful had sons: Alton Monroe Tomlinson, born Oct. 17, 1874 in Buchanan, and died in 1941, who married Rachael Huff on July 27, 1898, and Willis J. Tomlinson, of Niles, MI and later, of West Chester, PA. (Obit for Alton in the "Niles Daily Star" on May 19, 1941, page two. Obit for Willis in same newspaper, on April 29, 1941, page 2). Also daughters, Mrs. Alta (or Alva) Boyer of Seattle, Wash. and Laura Tomlinson, who died on Dec. 22, 1887, abt. age 20. (Laura's obit in the "Buchanan Record" newspaper, on Thursday, Dec. 22, 1887, page 3). d. April 21, 1913 in Buchanan, MI. Buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, MI. -------------------------------------- 3. Silas J. Tomlinson. b. Jan. 27, 1842. He served in the Civil War, in the Twenty-Fourth MI Infantry, Company K. d. He died of disease at Alexandria, Virginia on Dec. 5, 1864. Buried in the Alexandria National Cemetery in Alexandria City, Virginia. -------------------------------------- 4. Benjamin F. Tomlinson. b. Aug. 30, 1844, in Indiana. m. June 30, 1867 in Berrien Co. MI to Harriet A. Barber. d. Oct. 4, 1919 in Buchanan, MI. Harriet is buried in this cemetery. Benjamin is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, MI. ------------------------------------ 5. Elizabeth M. Tomlinson. b. Dec. 23, 1846. d. May 11, 1864 (unmarried, age 17). Buried in the" Virginian's Burying Ground", near her parents. ------------------------------------ 6. Albert L. Tomlinson (Jr.). b. April 4,1849. d. July 6, 1852 (in St. Joseph Co. Indiana?}. ------------------------------------ 7. Erastus W. Tomlinson. b. June 19, 1853, in Indiana. d. Feb. 7, 1880. ------------------------------------ 8. Mary Ann Tomlinson. b. July 29, 1856. m. Darwin DeWitt Pangborn, the son of Joel and Sarah Pangborn, on March 10, 1880, in the M.E. Parsonage in Buchanan, MI, by Rev. White. Children: Mrs. Grace Nutt of Dearborn, MI, Mrs. Zoa Forman Eby of Elkhart, IN, Mrs. Alice Fowler of Big Rapids, MI, and Albert O. Pangborn of Niles, MI. d. Oct. 18, 1946 in Buchanan, Twp. Buried: Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, Berrien Co. Michigan (Section A, Lot 239). The obituary for Mary Pangborn was published in the "Niles Daily Star" newspaper in Niles, MI on Oct. 19, 1946, page 2. (See the bio for Mary Ann Pangborn on this web site). The obituary for Darwin was published in the "Niles Daily Star" in Niles, MI on Sat. Feb. 9, 1957, page 2. _____________________________________ Albert and Lucinda Tomlinson moved their family to Buchanan Township, Berrien Co. Michigan about 1854. They lived in Section 15 of Buchanan Twp., next door to Lucinda's sister Barbara Ann and Barbara's husband John Fleming Dragoo Sr. ------------------------------------- The "Berrien County Record", newspaper in Buchanan, Michigan, on Thurs. May 4, 1876, page 2, column 7, states: ----- Deaths: Died April 20, 1876 of consumption, Mrs. LUCINDA TOMLINSON, wife of Albert Tomlinson, aged sixty-one years and twenty days. --- Note: The "Michigan Genealogical Death Indexing System", by the Michigan Department of Health, states that Lucinda died at the age of 61 years, and 21 days. ----------------------------------- Lucinda died on consumption, in Buchanan Township, Berrien County Michigan. ------------------------------------- Lucinda's husband Albert, and their 17-year-old daughter Elizabeth, are also buried in this cemetery, as well as their daughter-in-law Harriet (Barber) Tomlinson, the wife of their son Benjamin. ------------------------------------ Lucinda's brother-in-law John Fleming Dragoo Sr. (husband of her sister Barbara Ann), is also buried here, with two of his children, Fanny and Mary Dragoo. ------------------------------- Lucinda's side of the headstone reads: --- LUCINDA WIFE OF ALBERT TOMLINSON DIED Apr. 20, 1876 AGED [61 yrs. & 20 (or 21) dys.] --------------------- Headstone photos courtesy of Robert D.
