Daughter of Samuel Birchard and Emily Cornelia Day OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, May 23, 1989 CRAWFORD Alberta May, daughter of Samuel and Emily Birchard, was born on July 11, 1918, near Kellogg in Jasper County, Iowa. Alberta graduated from Kellogg High School in 1937 and later attended North Central Bible College in Minneapolis. On April 20, 1947, she was united in marriage to Deloss Crawford of Norwood. This union was blessed with a son, Norman Deloss, on September 27, 1948. Deloss and Alberta celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with over 100 relatives and friends in 1987. Alberta had been blind for approximately six years before undergoing the brain tumor surgery which took her life on May 9, 1989. She never regained consciousness after the operation. Her broken and bruised body, a body unworthy of the beautiful spirit it once contained, will be layed to rest, to join the elements from which it came. Her spirit has now escaped the confinement of the body and is now looking with delight at her heavenly home. Her spirit will be sorely missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known her. She was grateful for the smallest of life's pleasures and was able to find contentment in adverse circumstances. She put the desires of others above the needs of her own; this unselfless spirit has not been lost from this earth because a vineyard of love was planted in those who were influenced by her. Alberta is survived by her husband, Deloss of Chariton and their son, Norman and his wife, Sheri, of Olympia, Wash., a brother, Winfield "Pete" Birchard of Marshalltown and a sister, Doris Niemantsverdriet of Marshalltown and a sister, Helen Harvey of San Jose, Calif. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 13, 1989 at 1 p.m. at the Mosher Funeral Home in Chariton. The service was conducted by Rev. Eugene Sparks, with music by Peggy Sones. Interment was in the Norwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Donald Crawford, Gary Crawford, Leonard Day, Larry McGrew, Orvel McReynolds and Richard Reel. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
