Tunberg, born Jan. 6, 1852 at Trollhatten, Sweden. In the year 1865, at age of 13 he came with his parents to America. They came from Sweden to Copenhagen, Den. to Kiehl, Holstien, then on railroad to Hamburg. From Hamburg on English sailship to New York-six weeks and three days and two weeks on railroad to St. Joseph, Mo. From there to Omaha on a St. Louis steamer loaded with iron rails and one of the first U. P. locomotives that came to Omaha. The parents of Mr. Tunberg settled in Omaha till 1867, when they moved to a farm two miles south of Oakland, Burt county. Mr. Tunberg lived with his parents till 1869 when he moved over into Dodge county, where he followed farming until 1888, when he moved to Hooper, engaging in the elevator business which he sold in 1894 to Nye, Schneider, Fowler Co. Mr. Tunberg next went into implement business and has built a trade for miles around. To show the strength of him with the trade in this community, last year he refused to longer be dictated to by the trust and put in independent line and sold 80 per cent of the harvester goods. A. E. Tunberg was married to Augusta Klingbeil on March 4, 1874, five children were born to this union, three now living - Karl in Seattle, Wash., Anton, a member of the firm here, and Mrs. Burliegh of Lincoln. In the fall of '65, Mr. Tunberg herded cattle, his first work in America on grounds around capitol at Omaha, where high school building now stands. At that time a five-board cottonwood fence surrounded the capital with two rows of cotton wood trees planted around inside fence. Omaha had about 3,000 inhabitants. The old U. P. headquarters on Ninth and Farnam was then a hotel, where all the traffic over Overland trail to the mountains, landed. The nearest neighbor to the Tunberg homestead their first year near Oakland, on the east was Tekamah, on west was at West Point, north, Mr. Oakes at now Oakland, and beyond none nearer than Dakota Co., on south, a few on Logan; yet Indians were numerous, as many as 50 tents could be seen along the creek near their home.
