Heitzman. ∼ Alexander Mehaffey Jr., 77, of Vermillion, SD passed away Friday, October 12, 2007 at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center. Alex was born March 6, 1930 in Riverside, IA to Alex and Libby (Henick) Mehaffey. He graduated from Riverside High School before entering the Army serving during the Korean War for 18 months. Alex returned to Riverside to marry his high school sweetheart, Anita Schnoebelen on February 14, 1953. They had been married for over 54 years. Alex attended Iowa Wesleyan College and earned his BS in Mathematics, and earned his masters from the University of Iowa. He and Anita moved to Vermillion where Alex became a mathematics professor for the University of South Dakota. Later he earned his Doctorate from USD in the history of mathematics. Alex served USD for over 42 years until he retired in 1995. The last 10 years at the University, he was chairman of the Mathematics Department. Alex loved woodworking, reading, gardening, and bird watching. He volunteered at the W.H. Over Museum for many years, and was honored by a governors proclamation for his many hours of time devoted to building and repairing exhibits. Alex was also very active in the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion. He is survived by his wife Anita of Vermillion, one son Randy of Columbia, IL, and three daughters; Cindy (Ernie) Brawner of Valley Park, MO, Kathy Terry) Hofer of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary (Curt) Strande of Junction City, Kansas, and eight grandchildren: Trent, Sean, Amanda, Haley, Jacob, Jared, Kyle and Nicole. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral mass will be Tuesday, October 16 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion with burial to follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion.
