Description	:	ALEXANDER SMITH was born May 14, 1820 in Inverness, Scotland, and moved to Grey County with his family in 1840. He married CHRISTINA BLACK in 1863. In each census from 1852 through 1901 Alex is listed as a farmer on Conc. 1 Lot 1 of Bentinck Twp. In a book "Farm Lanes of Bentinck" it states - "Alexander Smith registered his 50 acre claim about 1842 and had cleared enough land to obtain the crown Patent in 1848. Read More	ALEXANDER SMITH was born May 14, 1820 in Inverness, Scotland, and moved to Grey County with his family in 1840. He married CHRISTINA BLACK in 1863. In each census from 1852 through 1901 Alex is listed as a farmer on Conc. 1 Lot 1 of Bentinck Twp. In a book "Farm Lanes of Bentinck" it states - "Alexander Smith registered his 50 acre claim about 1842 and had cleared enough land to obtain the crown Patent in 1848. The little community at the corner was rapidly expanding. In 1868 the township and Smiths drew up "Plan 70 Smithville". It was made up of 24 lots with 2 rows of 12 back to back. Each lot had a frontage of 55 ft. & was 165 ft. in depth. A street called Dundas Street was also built into the plan on the west side with an entrance off the townline. This would be the future plan for Dornoch. In the Politics section of this book it states that the Township of Bentinck was formed in February of 1850 and Alexander Smith was on the first Council. In 1851 he was Reeve and in 1860 was Deputy Reeve. Both Alexander and Christina died in 1903 and are buried in the Latona Cemetery. Email address of contributor: [email protected]
