Description	:	In 1840 the crofters living near Strathspey in the Highlands of Scotland had been ordered to move off the land immediately by the landlord. James decided to move his family to Canada based on stories from others who had emigrated to Nova Scotia as well as from a grandfather who served with the British troops for 3 years in Canada. James decided to move his family to Canada based on stories from others who had emigrated to Nova Scotia as well as from a grandfather who served with the British troops for 3 years in Canada. James and Ann Frazer had eight sons - John, Duncan, Peter, James, Alexander, Thomas and twins Donald & William, the youngest in the family. They also had three daughters - Elspeth, Isabella & Anne. All the children along with the spouses of those who were married set sail on the "British King" from Cromerty on May 18, 1840. Due to severe storms the voyage took 3 months to reach Quebec. After wintering in Cornwall, James and 2 sons set forth in 1841 accompanied by an Indian guide to explore the district near Lake Huron. South of Owen Sound they claimed several tracts of land that reminded them of the hills & glens in Scotland. This locality was first called "Smithville", then Latona (the first post office), then "Griffins Corners" and finally the present name Dornoch. James and Ann were the grandparents of nearly seventy grandchildren. Many moved to other areas of Ontario and some moved to the West. Family members married spouses from other early pioneer families – Ledingham, McIntosh, Corlett, McCallum & Skene. James died in 1871 at age 87 and Ann died in 1863 exactly 77 years from her birth in 1786.
