The funeral was held from the home Sunday afternoon at one o'clock, with Rev. N. G. Palmer, assisted by Rev. J. H. Beitel, in charge. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, being in charge of the Mason lodge of which Mr. Murray was a charter member. The obituary, giving a history of his life, follows: Henderson Murray was born in Campbell county, Tennessee, September 25, 1837, the son of James D. and Susan Langley Murray. He died at his home in Franklin, Nebraska, March 16, 1923, aged 85 years, 5 months and 21 days. While he was still a lad his parents removed from Tennessee to Missouri, later to Iowa, and still later to Rock Bluffs, Nebraska, the family living at the latter place during the years of the Civil war. On account of his small stature Mr. Murray was unable to enlist for military service, although he made an attempt to do so. Failing in the effort to serve his country on the battle field, he entered the service of the government as a teamster upon the western prairies. He served three years in this capacity. He carried government freight over a route extending from Nebraska City to Fort Laramie, and thence to the present city of Denver, covering a territory which was then an unpeopled wilderness, except for hostile Indian tribes and undergoing trials and privations as great or greater than he would have endured on southern battle fields. In 1871 Mr. Murray made a homestead entry in Franklin county, and the following year came to his homestead to live. By his own labor he cut the trees and built himself a log house. To this humble home, three years later, he brought his bride. He was married May 18, 1875, to Bridget Doher, whom he had known in the old days in eastern Nebraska. From 1872 until the day of his death, Mr. Murray had been a resident of Franklin county, one of its most prominent and respected citizens. When he came to this country it was new and untried. It was a land that tested the metal of which men are made. But within his diminutive body was the soul of a pioneer, and for over fifty years Henderson Murray lived and labored for its advancement. In his old age he saw it at last transformed into a land of plenty, filled with a prosperous people, with its best years to come, and sat himself down under his own vine and fig tree and was content. He was one of the men who helped to lay the foundations on which is being built a mighty empire of the prairie. During his long life in Franklin county Mr. Murray, until ill health took possession of his body, was always indentified with county and community affairs. He served as county treasurer from 1892 to 1895 inclusive. Until 1892, the family home was on the original homestead. In that year, it was removed to Bloomington, where it remained until 1896. The family then returned to the homestead where they resided for four years. In 1890 they located on a farm northeast of Franklin, remaining there until 1903, when a move was made to Franklin for a couple of years. Returning to the farm in 1905, the family continued to reside northeast of Franklin until 1911, when the home was permanently located in Franklin. To Mr. and Mrs. Murray were born seven children, two of whom, James and Raymond, died in infancy. The five children who survive are: Stephen Murray of Bloomington; Horatio J. Murray of Franklin; Mrs. Susan Shoemaker of Franklin; Ernest E. Murray of Franklin; and Wm. II Murray of Naponee. Six grandchildren are also left behind. The deceased is also mourned by two brothers and two sisters: A. H. Murray of Easton, Kan.; William Murray of Batavia, Illinois; Mrs. John Stafford of Easton, Kansas; and Mrs. Sarah Mucklow of Kansas City, Missouri. On April 7, 1918, Mr. Murray's life was saddened by the death of his wife, with whom he had enjoyed nearly forty-three years of perfect happiness. Now in a new and better country they resume the journey of life together, this time a journey that shall have no end. Mr. Murray was a member of the Masonic Order. He was initiated into the mysteries of Free Masonry in Rock Bluffs lodge, No. 20, on March 4, 1868. He was passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft on March 18, 1868; and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on September 15,1869. After coming west he affiliated with Joppa lodge, having been a Mason for over fifty five years. The finest thing remains to be said. Mr. Murray was a Christian man. In early manhood he gave his life to Christ and devoted himself to the Master's service. For many years, until the infirmities of the body began to press upon him, he was active in the work of the kingdom. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Bloomington and for many years was one of its most faithful members. He established a Sunday school in district No. 15, and for many years served as its superintendent. He also conducted a Sunday school class for several years in district No. 6. On October 20, 1909, he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church in Franklin and to the end of his life he remained an earnest and faithful member, loved by all who knew him best and respected by all. The other day the Master called and he went home to be forever with the church triumphant. "He is not dead, this friend, not dead, but in the paths we mortals tread, Gone some few trifiling steps ahead, And nearer to the end, So that we, too, once past the bend, Shall meet again, as face to face, this friend, We fancy dead."
