Description	:	Alfred James O'Neill, grandson of Ireland-born James O'Neill and Margaret Morrison O'Neill, and son of Henry and Nora Freel O'Neill, was born in a home on The O'Neill Homestead on what was later Lovers Lane on the hill above the current airport north of Eastsound on Orcas Island in San Juan County, Washington. Read More	Alfred James O'Neill, grandson of Ireland-born James O'Neill and Margaret Morrison O'Neill, and son of Henry and Nora Freel O'Neill, was born in a home on The O'Neill Homestead on what was later Lovers Lane on the hill above the current airport north of Eastsound on Orcas Island in San Juan County, Washington. Al served in the U.S. Marine Corps in France from May 15, 1917 to June 30, 1919 in World War One. After he returned home, Al worked for Robert Moran and then became the first Ranger in Moran State Park after Mr. Moran donated the park to Washington State in 1921.(In his museum interview, Al referred to himself as the "Caretaker" at Moran State Park. Al and his sister Annie lived at Mountain Lake in a little cabin on the point, which was later a campground. Al and Grace Edgren were married in Bellingham, Washington on September 23, 1924.The family lived on Cherry Hill east of Buck Bay in Olga. Then Al built their home in Olga south of Olga Energetic Club (later Olga Community Club) from a house that he dismantled in Rosario for Robert Moran and added to a chicken house. In 1947 the O'Neills sold the house to Jack and Jane Barfoot after Al built their new home on the hill north of the Strawberry Cannery (later Orcas Island Artworks). Another building project in 1956 was the camper he built on the back of his red Studebaker pickup which provided the family some great road trips. Al worked for a number of years as San Juan County 'Road Boss' on Orcas Island until an on-the-job injury forced an early retirement.
