HANDCOCK PASSED AWAY MONDAY EVENING Died From Effects of Paralytic Stroke Had Lived Long and Adventurous Life A.O. Handcock, a resident of the Bloomingdale district since 1869, and one of the prominent and respected farmers of the county, died at his home Monday from the effects of a paralytic stroke which he had suffered a short time before. Mr. Handcock was in town December 19, in apparently perfect health, notwithstanding his 82 years. That was his last trip to town, as the stroke came a short time afterwards, from which he never recovered. Funeral services are to be held today at the Episcopal church in Vermillion, Rev. John M.S. McDonald officiating. Alfred Ormsby Handcock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Handcock, was born in St, Milo, France, May 23, 1842. He died at his home in Clay county Jan. 9, 1926, aged 82 years, 7 months and 14 days. At the age of five years he moved with his parents to the Isle of Jersey, and when 8 years old, the family emigrated to Canada. On April 23, 1862, Mr. Handcock and his brother and three other companions started overland via the ox team route for British Columbia, when that country was under the control of the Hudson Bay Company and was inhabited by Indians, half-breeds, buffalo and wolves. They travelled over the plains between Ft. Garry, now Winnipeg, and mountains by the Yellow Horse pass, and paddled down the Frazier river almost from the headwaters of that stream in dugouts which they made themselves. They reached the Carribou mines in the fall of 1862. Mr. Handcock went to New Westminster where he spent the winter and in 1863 went back to the mines and worked for a year. He then left for Vancouver and spent the winter, and in April 1864, sailed for Astoria, Oregon, going up the Columbia river to Portland and from there to Idaho. That fall he went to Denver to spend the winter and in the spring of 1865 bull whacked freight from Julesburg, Colorado, to Ft. Casper, Wyoming. From there he came into Nebraska and worked in saw mills and chopping wood for the Union and Pacific railroad which was then pushing through to the Pacific coast. After two years at that job he came into South Dakota, and on March 29, 1869, filed on a homestead near Bloomingdale, where he made his home for the rest of his life. On May 13, 1872, he was united in marriage to Sophia Ester, by the Rev. Morrison, rector of the Episcopal church. He is survived by his wife, 8 children, 16 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. The children are Mrs. Louise Eberhart, Vermillion; Alfred O. Handcock, Jr., Taft, California; Edward H. Handcock, Light Cap, S.D.; Mrs. Francis Adams, Cottonwood, S.D.; Lloyd G.
