Box 231; Belgrade, NE 69623) - compliments of Shari Smith, 2225 Calimyrna Ave., Merced, CA 95340 Durand born 16 Septemeber 1839 died November 1893 Alfred Durand, who lived five miles southwest of St. Edward, died Wednesday night at nine 0'clock. Mr. Durand was and old soldier, having served more than three years in the Union Army. He was a firm and true friend of his old comrades and loved to relate the events of his army life. He was a member of the famouse "Kansas Jay Hackers," (Company C 7th Kansas Calvary) and also served in Company K 9th Illinois Infantry. The death of comrade Durand is a shock to the communty, and especially to his old companions. The writer saw and conversed with him on election day and he appeared to be in his usual health. But the fatal heart trouble, by which so many of the old soldiers are suddenly taken away, ended hi life after a struggle of but a few hours. Alfed Durand was a good man and will be missed in the community.
