Read More	The Plainview News, October 4, 1939 "Pioneer Lady Dies Suddenly Saturday Homesteaded On Farm Four Miles North Of Plainview In 1883" Alice Almira, a daughter of Charles and Mary Friend, was born near Porter, Porter county, Indiana, September 29, 1857. She was next to the youngest child of a family of five daughters and three sons, all of who attained an age of at least seventy-five years, and all have proceeded her in death. She became an orphan at an early age and made her home with an older sister. While visiting another sister at LaPorte, Iowa, she met a cousin of her brother-in-law, Mr. Hosea F. Hackett, and they were united in marriage March 24, 1879. To them seven children were born. Three preceded her in death. They were Grace who died in infancy, Harry who died in 1908 and Lyra Edith, (Mrs. J. E. Fulton) who died March 1, 1935. The surviving children are Maud (Mrs. John Huffman), Ira of Burwell, Nebraska, Roy of Plainview, Nebraska and Edna at home, Plainview, Nebraska. After renting for four years in Iowa they came to Pierce county, Nebraska and homesteaded a farm 4 1/2 miles north of Plainview. There were no improvements on this farm except a small run down sod house and a shallow well, in the bed of a dry creek. The youngest son, Roy, now lives on the farm. They did not immediately live on their farm but lived with Mr. Hackett's brother the first winter until they built a small two-room house on their own homestead. After some time they went to live in Kansas City for a short time, then returned to the farm and lived there until 1920 when they moved to Plainview, Nebraska where their home has since been maintained. Mr. Hackett passed away in 1926. Mrs. Hackett was among that steadily diminishing number of energetic and rugged pioneers to whom we are indebted for the building of our midwest civilization. She experienced all the unpleasantness of pioneer life. She well remembered to her last days the early storms and blizzards. The 1888 blizzard was disastrous to them. During its blow they lost all their cattle except a little calf that happened to be tied to the barn. During another blizzard and until they could get out to town they ground corn for bread in a coffee mill. She was among the excited during the great Indian scare. The whole country populace was thrown into a panic and fled to the towns when some one falsely reported that the Indians were on the war-path and were coming this way. During those early days when it was hard to get to town, doctors few, no hospitals or modern conveniences the neighbors, shared with each other in times of need and distress. They took turns in helping during sickness or bereavement. They made up in human kindness and thoughtfulness the lack of our modern helps. Mrs. Hackett had been ill for the last five years -- much of the time being very sick. She had just gone through one of these attacks and was considered much improved, when she was walking in the yard Saturday evening, September 30 she stooped to pick a flower, fell face forward and in a few minutes she had passed away. Her Lord and Master had called her at the age of 82 years and 6 days. All her children have been a comfort to her and have visited and helped lovingly care for her. During all these years of illness she has been tenderly watched and lovingly cared for by her daughter, Edna. No doubt this thoughtful care lengthened her days, and added to her comfort and pleasure. She united with the Methodist church under the pastorate of Rev. L. K. McNiel, Aug 1, 1897. She had always been of much help to her church. She is survived by her children, ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, October 3, in the Methodist church in charge of the pastor Rev. B. N. Kunkel.
