Christmas Eve was a sad occasion for the eight, fatherless children of Mrs. Alice Daniels, aged 42, who has been detained for several weeks at the county jail, awaiting admission to the Easthaven asylum at Richmond, for it was marked by the passing of their surviving parent and left them quite alone in the world. Mrs. Daniels' life in the last few years has been on of cumulative sorrow and infirmity, a burden under which her physical and mental faculties gave away and from which she finally gained surcease when, she passed quietly away at the jail on Sunday morning. Following the death of her husband several years ago Mrs. Daniels made a brave attempt to keep her family together but was obliged to give up her home when her sight failed. She was admitted to the Robert W. Long Hospital at Indianapolis and the specialists there pronounced her case incurable. She soon became totally blind. It was necessary that her children be separated from her and those not old enough to support themselves were made wards of the county. In the last few months Mrs. Daniels' health has been very seriously undermined and her mental faculties have given away. She was being cared for at the jail, awaiting admission to the hospital at Richmond when she suffered a complete physical breakdown. For several days her condition has been hopeless. Four of her children were visitors at her bedside on Saturday but none were with her when she passed away early Sunday morning. Mrs. Daniels was a member of a highly esteemed Chester township family. The remains were taken on Sunday morning to the home of her brother, Levi Lowery, west of Keystone, and the funeral services were conducted at 1:30 o'clock today, at the Friends Church at Keystone. The surviving relatives include eight children, one brother, and two sisters. Officer W. A. Lipkey went to Marion this morning and brought back with him John and Ralph Daniels, two sons of Mrs. Daniels, to attend the funeral this afternoon of their mother.
