Description	:	Alice Leona Little Francis, daughter of Oscar and Della Moore Carpenter, was born July 21, 1923 in Dexter and died July 17, 2010 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 26 days. Alice grew up in Dexter where she graduated from Dexter High School.She was united in marriage with Francis M. Little, Sr. (Bud) in 1944. Read More	Alice Leona Little Francis, daughter of Oscar and Della Moore Carpenter, was born July 21, 1923 in Dexter and died July 17, 2010 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 26 days. Alice grew up in Dexter where she graduated from Dexter High School.She was united in marriage with Francis M. Little, Sr. (Bud) in 1944. To this union, eight children were born: Francis, Jr., James, Jean, Peggy, Linda, Nancy, LuAnn and Linda Jo. Bud died in 1967. She later married William Connette Francis. Alice was employed in the nursing profession her entire working career. She began as a nurse's aide at the King's Daughters Hospital in Perry. She then started working at the Woodard State Hospital School as a ward attendant. In 1971, she completed her nurse's training and became a licensed practical nurse. She retired from the Hospital School in 1985, having worked for the State of Iowa for 27 years. In retirement, Alice continued in the nursing field by working part-time at the Perry Lutheran Home and Rowley Masonic Home as well as providing care for friends and family in their time of need. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 85 in Perry, where she held the office of president secretary for many years. Alice helped the auxiliary in the kitchen for Wednesday and Saturday night bingo. She received numerous requests from the bingo players to make her potato salad and chicken and noodles for bingo nights! Alice had many hobbies. Crocheting was one of her favorites. She had crocheted an afghan for all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren including the one yet to be born in September as well as her most recent great-grandchild, Angus Dean, who was born the day Alice was called home. She also enjoyed her weekly domino games with her sister and brother-in-law, Velma and Arnold. They would have lunch together and then the dominos came out. They would play for several hours at a time. Alice always said there were official rules and "Arnold's Rules," and, of course, they would always have to play by Arnold's Rules. Bowling was another activity she enjoyed. She bowled in leagues in Adel and Perry and looked forward to going to the State Bowling Tournaments. She said the girls always had a lot of fun on those weekend trips. Alice also played cards with her friends on Thursday and Friday nights for many years. She also had a great love for fishing. Alice liked to collect angels, bears, antique plates, cups, saucers and bowls. She enjoyed trying out new cooking recipes that she would find in magazines and cookbooks. She'd have the grandkids be the taste testers for these recipes and they were to give the recipe some type of rating like, "That's yummy, make that again," or "that's terrible, and toss that recipe out!!"Alice really enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Her eyes always lit up when they came to visit. She always had a soft spot in her heart for all of her grandkids. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Francis Little Sr. and William Francis; daughter, Jean Sholley; step-granddaughter, Bethany Brantly; brothers, Lloyd, Ralph and Paul (in infancy) and sisters, Hazel Evans, Marie Klemmetson, Grace Wolfe, Martha Ballinger and Genora Stodden. She is survived by her sons, Francis Little, Jr. and his wife Toni of Green Valley, Ariz. and James Little and his wife Valerie of Pearl River, La.; daughters, Peggy Grebner and her husband Dennis of Hamilton, Mo., Linda Hankinson of Perry, Nancy Smith of Mequan, Wis., LuAnn Grove and her companion Tim Sweet of DeSoto and Linda Jo Small and her husband Gene of Dallas Center; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Sherlock of Ojai, Calif. and Velma Sheldahl and her husband Arnold of Menlo; brother-in-law Merlin Stodden; numerous nieces and nephews and her close friends, Annie Michelson, Alma Collins and Mary Jane and Kenny Hilpipre and family.
