Description	:	Marian was the daughter of Wilder J. (John) and Mary E. (Nason) Whittier. She had two siblings; John T. and Elizabeth B. At a very young age Marian had a lot of losses. Her brother John died in 1899 at the age of five of what was described as an accident of some kind. In 1902 her father died of influenza. After his death Marian's mother felt it best if her and Elizabeth live with their grandmother in Newton for awhile. In 1902 her father died of influenza. After his death Marian's mother felt it best if her and Elizabeth live with their grandmother in Newton for awhile. Three months later while living in Newton, Elizabeth died of meningitis at the age of four. Loosing all but her mother at such a young age had a lasting effect on my great grandmother throughout her life. Marian continued to live with her grandmother after Elizabeth's death. She commuted to Amesbury in order that she could attend high school there. Marian graduated from Amesbury High School in 1910 at the top of her class. While in high school she met Edward Hatch, who was the love of her life. While dating him she rented a room from Edward's parents at their house on High Street in Amesbury. During this time she worked at Biddle and Smart Automobile Company. My great grandparents were married on October 1, 1910 in Plaistow, New Hampshire. They lived with Edward's parents for the first couple years of their marriage. In 1911 their son Edward was born. In the mid-1920s Marian and her family moved to Newton so that she could care for her grandmother who'd become ill. She would live in there for the remainder of her life. Marian and Edward were able to give my grandfather a good life. Upon Marian's grandmother's death she inherited her house. Her grandmother had inherited the house herself when her second died in 1918. The house would remain in the family for eighty-six years. Edward G., Jr was Marian and Edward's only child so it was easier for them to take care of his needs. Marian was the first librarian in Newton. She took her job seriously making sure that the library had up to date and classic books. My great grandmother also made the lunches and severed them everyday to the school aged children in Newton. The lunches were made fresh in her own kitchen. When my grandfather got married and my father was born Marian was ecstatic. The birth of my three brothers and I helped her deal with the loss of her son who had died at the age of fifty-three. My father, brothers and myself could never replaces all of the people who'd Marian lost. However, being with my brothers and I helped her deal with the immense sense of loss she had. Both Marian and Edward adored my brothers and I. In Marian's later years she didn't take care of herself. She had recently been diagnosed as having diabetes in the late 1960s. Marian didn't eat properly. The diabetes had such an impact on one of my great grandmother's legs that it had to be amputated. My great grandmother died during surgery in May 1970 while the leg was being removed. She was seventy-eight. At the time of her death she was seventy-eight. She'd been married to Edward for sixty-years.
