During her infancy, Alice Johnston settled with her parents on a homestead in the remote forest community of Chelatchie in north Clark County, Washington Territory, where she attended rural schools. On April 19, 1893, at Vancouver, Washington, she married Lionel Proctor, a Wisconsin-born farmer, carpenter, and butcher who had lived in the Pacific Northwest since 1891. The couple first resided briefly in View, a rural community located some seven miles east of the town of La Center in north central Clark County, Washington. In 1895, shortly after the birth of their son, the Proctors moved to East Portland, Oregon, where Alice died at 22 from tuberculosis, or "consumption," as it was then commonly called. She is buried in an unmarked grave near other family members at La Center, Washington. On September 2, 1897, at Portland, Oregon, Lionel Proctor married his second wife, Isabelle Grimm (1877-1938), with whom he had eight children. Soon after they were married, Lionel and his new wife settled in Clark County, Washington. During this time, Lionel built and operated a large slaughterhouse near his former home in View and began a profitable trade as a purveyor of salted pork, which he cured and shipped in large quantities to the gold-fevered Klondike region of Canada's Yukon Territory. Financial problems forced Lionel to liquidate his business holdings in Washington in 1907. Afterward, he and Isabelle farmed for many years in the Laurel community, seven miles northwest of Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon, in the Chehalem Mountain district. Lionel died at 77.
