Fisher, 2005. It is reprinted with the author's permission.) Jack Johnston, a machinist, spent his youth at La Center, Washington, and in Portland and Troutdale, Oregon. As a young man he lived for a short time in El Paso, Texas, while learning his trade. Jack and his first wife, Mae Grubbs, made their home in Portland, Oregon. Mae had spent the early years of her childhood in Michigan, moving to Oregon with her parents as a teenager. The Johnstons had no children, and were later divorced. In 1918 Mae married her second husband, Otis Wright Livingston (1887-1949), with whom she resided in Texas and California. She left no heirs, and died at 91. In 1920 Jack married his second wife, Emma Wilson, a housekeeper his mother had employed in her Troutdale home. A California native, Emma was the former wife of James Henry Kennedy (1879-1952), a rancher at Burns, Harney County, Oregon. Emma had come to Troutdale to work following her divorce from James Kennedy. Jack and Emma Johnston lived for a number of years on a farm at Gervais, Marion County, Oregon, but later resided in Portland while Jack continued to follow the machinist's trade. He succumbed to congestive heart failure at 60. Emma Johnston was married a final time, in 1946, to Henry Lang (1891-1972), a carpenter and shoe repairman and native of Germany. The couple resided in Portland, Oregon, where for many years Henry operated Lang's Shoe Repair Shop on S.E. Milwaukie Avenue. Emma died at 76, and is buried beside Jack Johnston in La Center, Washington.
