McCue of nine miles southwest of Cumberland accidentally took her life a week ago last Sunday. “Mrs. W. A. McCue, living on the Frank Roberts farm northeast of Grant, shot herself last evening and died from the effects of the shot about eight o’clock. The circumstances surrounding her death are rated peculiar, but it is doubtless a case of “I didn’t know it was loaded.” Mrs. McCue had prepared supper, had taken care of the dishes as usual, and the members of the family were sitting in the dining room. She had gotten up from her husband’s lap and had started to the bedroom, when he gave her a revolver which he was carrying and which belonged to her. The woman, so McCue stated in his testimony before the coroner’s jury turned the gun upon herself and pulled the trigger. The shell exploded and a bullet entered her right side, producing death about three quarters of an hour later. “As soon as the explosion occurred, Mrs. McCue, so he stated, exclaimed, “Hello, I didn’t know it was loaded. I didn’t mean to do that.” Mrs. McCue remained conscious for a half hour after the shooting then related into unconsciousness, remaining in that state for about fifteen minutes, or until the hour of her death. Dr. Stults, the county coroner was immediately notified and proceeded to the Robert’s farm. A jury was empaneled, composed of I. N. Thomas, A. Roberts, and L. A. Richter. The testimony of Mr. McCue was taken and after the matter had been thoroughly investigated as was possible the jury retuned a verdict of accidental death. A five year old child of Mrs. McCue by a former husband was in the room at the time of the tragedy. Mrs. McCue was twenty-three years of age, but had been married prior to her union with Mr. McCue. Her first husband died last February. She and Mr. McCue were married the twenty-third of September last, and had lived on the the Robert’s farm since that date. Their domestic relations are pleasant. Mrs. McCue’s first husband was said to be wealthy. Funeral services were held last Thursday, having been delayed until Mrs. McCue’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary C. Gribble of Canon City, Colorado, could arrive to be present. Villisca Review, Thursday, December 19, 1907, page 3 Mrs. William McCue was buried in the cemetery here, December 10, 1907. She accidentally shot and killed herself at her home in Cass County the evening of December 8. She leaves her husband and one little son by a former husband to mourn their loss. Their son, Dudley Gribble was taken back to Colorado to live with William's mother (Mary Catherine (nee Flesher) Gribble, not Alice's mother.
