Charles McMullen LAMAR was born in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, on June 7, 1860, the son of Richard and Mary Anna K. (Caskey) Lamar. His father moved to that county on January 18, 1848; his mother was born there on August 8, 1828. Thomas LaMar, the great-grandfather of Charles M., was a native of France. He moved from there to England and became a naturalized Englishman. He married there and emigrated to America in 1653, settling in Prince George County, Maryland, on a grant of land (1,000 acres) he had obtained from the King of England. Afterwards, his son emigrated to the Martinsburg vicinity and bought a farm near the North Mountain near the Jonathan Thatcher homestead. The family eventually moved to Martinsburg. On May 17, 1882, at 116 S. Fremont St., Baltimore, Maryland, with the Rev. J. Edwin Amos officiating, Charles Lamar and Alice Virginia Reed, daughter of Amos and Frances C. (Grimes) Reed, were married. Alice Virginia was born in that city November 2, 1860. Charles Lamar was Chairman of the Republican City Executive Committee while Hon. Alexander Clohan was Chairman of the Republican County Executive Committee. He was a candidate for Sheriff of Berkeley County, but lost that nomination to the late Kensey B. Creque, Jr. Charles Lamar was employed in the grain distilling business and in apple orchards, with his post office address listed as Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia. His brother, E. Holmes Lamar, was an educator in the schools of the county, and was the principal of the Hedgesville High School for a number of terms and was a graduate of Dickenson College, Carlysle, Pennsylvania.
