McLean was buried there as well and his 1904-1910 grave is lost to memory. Census records indicate Allen A McLean's parents were born in the Carolinas... his father in South Carolina and his mother in North Carolina. A.A. was born in North Carolina. By his age we can imagine he likely fought in the Civil War and possibly even that he was married before he came to FL. His 1880 census in FL even seems to indicate that he was a married man in 1880. Not much is known by me about this Allen A McLean in his pre Florida years but his Florida years up until his death around 1909/1910 seem well documented. Occupation: Laborer. Single. No marks by "cannot read and write" --- indicating he could read and write. Slight check mark beside "married during the census." Signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862, the Homestead Act encouraged migration by providing settlers 160 acres of public land. In exchange, homesteaders paid a small filing fee and were required to complete five years of continuous residence before receiving ownership of the land. Theodore Roosevelt was President in November 1904. McLean's name as ALBERT MCLEAN ... c/o His son William Alexander McLean SS Claim, according to Ancestry.com (see copy / paste below) , indicates that William's father was named Albert McLean The presumption, then, woud be that Allen's middle initial "A" is for Albert. Note, though that William's name is listed as Willian. His mother's maiden name is given as John's and not Cowart or Raulerson. John's was her step father. And so ...
