Memorials are suggested to Slater Christian Church. Born Oct. 5, 1918, south of Slater, he was the son of the late Allen B. Soper Sr. and Sara Anne Stafford Soper. On June 22, 1947, in Slater, he married Winifred C. "Winnie" Allen, who survives of the home. He was a member, past chairman of the board and elder emeritus of Slater Christian Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 78 in Slater. He attended Missouri Valley College from 1936 to 1938 and received his A.B. degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1940. Following World War II, he returned to the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated from the School of Law in 1948 and began his private practice of law in Slater, which he continued until his retirement in 2001. In 1953 he was appointed to fill a position on the Slater City Council and later that year was elected mayor, serving until 1958. In November 1970, he was appointed by Gov. Warren E. Hearns to the office of prosecuting attorney of Saline County and was re-elected in 1972. He served in the office of municipal judge for the city of Slater from 1949 until 1988. He was a charter member of the Big Bend Retreat Inc. Board of Directors and served as secretary and treasurer from the date of its organization in 1968 until July 1, 2000. He served as the first manager of the Slater Housing Authority. He was past chairman of the Saline County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Slater P.T.A., Slater Booster Club and the Slater Chamber of Commerce. He was past president of the Saline County Historical Society and Slater Rotary Club, from which he received the Paul Harris Fellow award. He had served on the board of the Sappington School Scholarship fund for many years and was a charter member of the board of directors of the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre. He was a volunteer tutor in the adult literacy program, a Boy Scout leader and coached Little League baseball. In addition to his law practice, he managed the family farm and livestock business, winning an award for conservation efforts on the farms he managed. Additional survivors include three sons, Meredith A. Soper of Melrose Park, Ill., John M. Soper of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Rodney Craig Soper of Lee's Summit; one daughter, Cherie Foresee of Lee's Summit; one sister, Roberta Gaba of Marshall; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Carrie Foresee and Carrie Ann Soper.
