Read More	*Alma Jean Cameron* Peterson (12 October 1942 - 20 November 2010) * FRONTENAC — *Alma "Jean" Cameron* Peterson*, 68, of Frontenac, died Saturday, November 20, 2010 at the University of Kansas Medical Center surrounded by her family and friends. Jean was born October 12, 1942 to George H. and Alma L. (Swope) Cameron at Pittsburg, Kansas. She was raised in Frontenac and attended local schools graduating from Frontenac High School with the class of 1960. Jean worked in a profusion of many different jobs at the Federal Reserve Bank, Thrifty Rent a Car, the Majestic and Gregory Coin and Stamp Co. while living in Kansas City, Mo. after graduating high school. She graduated from Kansas State College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) in 1969 with a degree in Social Work. Jean worked for the American National Red Cross in Service to Military Hospitals during the Vietnam War. During this time she was stationed stateside in Oklahoma and Texas. She then became the social worker for the Southeast Asia Burn Unit in Okinawa, Japan. In 1974 she began working for Kansas SRS in Services to the Blind, and foster care where she continued employment until 1983. She was the co-owner of the Town House, a used furniture and antique shop in Pittsburg for 16 years. She returned to social work and retired in 2009 from KVC after working with foster parents and children in custody. Throughout her life she was a collector of antiques and could often be found at an auction. Jean spent many years tracing the genealogies of her family, extended family, and friends. She was a movie buff from a very young age. Her Grandma Cameron would often take her into town to see movies at the Colonial and the Cozy. She carried on this tradition throughout her life with friends and family never forgetting to get extra butter on the popcorn. Jean was an avid reader and especially loved science fiction, fantasy, and presidential biographies. She could often be heard saying I'd rather my tombstone said ‘She read a good book' instead of ‘She kept a clean house'. She is survived by her daughter Rachel (Peterson) Chick and husband Matthew of Shawnee, KS., her step-daughter, Brooke (Peterson) Belcher and husband Steve of Ft. Scott, Ks. Her parents, George and Alma Cameron, two brothers Richard and Karen Cameron, Randy and Debbie Cameron, nieces and nephews Stephanie and Lee Shradar, Adam and Lindsey Cameron, Breanna Cameron, James Cameron and Adison and Brekyn Cameron and her cat Spooky. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Davera Maddox. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday (November 26) at the Brenner Mortuary. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday (November 24) at the Brenner Mortuary. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday to sign the register. Alma was born March 12, 1922, to James and Vera (Bolser) Swope at Carbon Center, MO. In 1941, she graduated as the class Vice President from Cockerill High School. On August 23, 1941, she was united in marriage to George H. Cameron in Girard, KS. They were happily married for seventy-three years until George's death March 8, 2015. Alma was a homemaker and was very involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren and the community of Frontenac, KS. She held memberships in the Rob Morris Chapter #74, Order of Eastern Star, the Frontenac American Legion Auxiliary Unit #43 and the Frontenac United Methodist Church. Alma never missed an opportunity to go on Saturday night dates with George and their best friends the Pettus' and Coleman's. She played cards whenever possible including many games of solitaire each day. George and Alma were named the Outstanding Family in 2005 by Pittsburg State University. Alma is survived by her two sons, Richard (Karen) Cameron and Randy (Debbie) Cameron, six grandchildren, Adam (Lindsey) Cameron, James (Kelli) Cameron, Stephanie (Lee) Shradar, Breanna (Ian) Morris, Brooke (Steve) Belcher and Rachel (Matt) Chick, five great-grandchildren, Adison and Brekyn Cameron and Vera and Eisley Shradar and Cameron Chick. She is also survived by two sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Wilma Jean Smardo. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers (Frank and Eddie Swope), a daughter, Alma Jean Cameron Peterson and a granddaughter, Robin Davera Maddox. A service for Alma is set for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, with Pastor Annie Ricker conducting the service. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 a.m., until 11:00 a.m., at the Brenner Mortuary, on Saturday.
