Read More	George Henry Cameron (October 5, 1918 - March 8, 2015) George Henry Cameron U.S. Veteran George Henry Cameron 96 of Frontenac died Sunday, March 8, 2015. George was born October 5, 1918 to William “Bill” and Nellie (Duff) Cameron at Yale, Kansas. George left schooling in the ninth grade after his father passed away to help support his mother and younger siblings. On August 23, 1941 he married Alma L. Swope in Girard, Kansas. Alma survives him living at their home in Frontenac where they lived and were happily married for seventy-three years. George worked for Mackie Clemens Coal Company prior to entering the US Army on December 11, 1942 following Pearl Harbor. George was a member of the 725th Railway Operating Battalion and was stationed in India as a railroad dispatcher. He was discharged from the US Army on November 2, 1945 as a Private First Class. George returned to work for Mackie Clemens as a heavy equipment operator and boom oiler after the war. When Mackie Clemens closed George studied to become an electrician. Through that training he became a master electrician and worked for Jackson Electric for twenty-eight years up until his retirement in 1983. George was an avid outdoor enthusiast and lover of sports. He coached youth leagues in Frontenac even before his children were old enough to play. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and for many years he raised bird dogs. He had an extraordinary green thumb and always had a vegetable and fruit garden that was the envy of the neighborhood. Though George left school at an early age he loved to learn and was a book worm, preferring westerns. You could always find him with a book in his hand or in his hip pocket. He also did a crossword puzzle almost every day of his adult life. George was easy going and cheerful and was often a man of few words. George and Alma were named the Outstanding Family in 2005 by Pittsburg State University. He loved his family immensely and never tired of spending time with his grandchildren. Membership was held in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Pittsburg Masonic Lodge #187, John F. Derby American Legion Post of Frontenac where he served as commander and treasurer, Rob Morris #74 Eastern Star chapter, the Montjoie Commandery #29 Knights of Templar, Mirza Shrine Arab Patrol and the Frontenac United Methodist Church. George is survived by his wife Alma, two sons Richard (Karen) Cameron and Randy (Debbie) Cameron, six grandchildren Adam (Lindsey) Cameron, James Cameron, Stephanie (Lee) Shradar, Breanna Cameron, Brooke (Steve) Belcher and Rachel (Matt) Chick, four great-grandchildren Adison and Brekyn Cameron and Vera and Eisley Shradar. He is also survived by two sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews including a special niece Wilma Jean Smardo. He was preceded in death by his parents and all eight siblings (Grace, Leander, Ruby, Ruth, Goldie, Herbert, Nellie and Thomas), a daughter Alma Jean Cameron Peterson and a granddaughter Robin Davera Maddox. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (March 11) at Brenner Mortuary. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, where the John F. Derby American Legion Post #43 of Frontenac will provide graveside military services. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 10:00 a.m. The family requests that memorials be given to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children or the Frontenac United Methodist Church. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Friends may leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com.
