Description	:	Mrs. Almie Ayers Almie Thornton was born at Saranac, New York, April 28, 1842 and passed away at her home in Creighton, Nebr., Dec. 22, 1930 at the ripe age of 87 years 7 months and 26 days. Read More	Mrs. Almie Ayers Almie Thornton was born at Saranac, New York, April 28, 1842 and passed away at her home in Creighton, Nebr., Dec. 22, 1930 at the ripe age of 87 years 7 months and 26 days. Her father enlisted in the Union army of the Civil war and was killed in the Battle of Gaines Mills. Her mother was a cousin of General Nathaniel Lyon. After teaching school for a few terms in New York and Vermont, Miss was pesauded by her married sister to come to Wisconsin in 1864 where wages were better. The following year, in September, she was married to George Ayers, who died eleven months after their marriage, and six months before a daughter was born to Mrs. Ayers. The infant joined her father in the Great Behond. On February 1, 1870, Mrs. Ayres was married to John Ayers, the brother of her former spouse. In 1876 Mr. Ayers came to Knox county and took up a homestead near where Verdigre now stands. Mrs. Ayer, having property in Wisconsin which could not be disposed of advantageously, remained there until three years later sold out and loading goods in a car, the balance of which was filled with number, came to join her husband on the homestead, and with some ready money purchased a quarter section of good land for $1.50 per acre. In 1896 Mr. and Mrs. Ayers moved to Creighton where she engaged in the millinery business in a building purchased on main street. Here they lived then years, then moved into their spacious residence on west Main street, where both lived the rest of their days, Mr. Ayers dying in 1918. Of this second marriage two children were born who survive her: Fred, who lives near Winnetoon, Nebr., and Mrs. Alva A. Baker, living on the old homestead. Mrs. Ayers united with the Methodist church in 1865 and became a member in Creighton in 1914. She also joined O. E. S. chapter as soon as organized in Creighton of which she served as Worthy Matron. Whatever she undertook she backed with her talents and resources and was aggressive in any forward movement for society's welfare. She was informed and congenial in her associations and leaves a large circle of friends who will not merely miss her but fell the loss of her departure.
