Baker, 68, who came to Knox county as a girl with her parents 60 years ago and thus ranked among its earlier residents, passed away at her home near Winnetoon last Thursday morning at 5:30. Afflicted with a kidney ailment three years ago, she had been in poor health since and in the past few weeks her condition had grown worse steadily. Baker, 68, who came to Knox county as a girl with her parents 60 years ago and thus ranked among its earlier residents, passed away at her home near Winnetoon last Thursday morning at 5:30. Afflicted with a kidney ailment three years ago, she had been in poor health since and in the past few weeks her condition had grown worse steadily. The unexpected death of her son, Niles, who passed away May 6 after a short illness, was a blow from which she never seemed to recover and apparently aggravated her condition. Born at Necedah, Wisc., February 26, 1871, Nellie Ayers Baker was 68 years, four months and 20 days old at death, July 20, 1939. She received her education at Creighton High School and Gates College at Neligh. Prior to her marriage, she taught several terms of school. July 12, 1891, she was united in marriage to Alva A. Baker at the home, where she lived all but four years of the 60, she spent in Knox county. Of five children born to the union, two died in infancy and a third, Niles passed away, May 6, 1939. Surviving in addition to her 79 year old bereaved husband, are two daughters, Helen at home and Nellibee McMillan of Genoa, Nebr. two grandsons, one brother, Fred Ayers of Winnetoon, other relatives and a host of friends. Through her long residence in the community and her lodge activities, both here and at Winnetoon, she was well and favorably known to hundreds in this section of the county. The Winnetoon Royal Neighbors, of which she was a member, had charge of the flowers at the funeral and the Easter Star Lodge of Creighton, of which she was also a member, attended in a body and conducted services at the grave. The Methodist church here, where the funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2:15, following services at the home at 1:15, was filled to capacity with the many, who assembled to pay a friend and neighbor a final tribute. Beautiful flowers also attested to the esteem in which Mrs. Baker was held. Officiating at the services was Rev. B.N. Kunkel of Plainview. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.
